Atlee Admits Truman
Uninformed on Assault
LONDON (JPS-Palcor)—A tacit
admission, that President Truman
was not notified beforehand by
the British Government of the ac-
tion they were planning against
Jewish Palestine June 29, was
made by Prime Minister Attlee in
Commons July 11, in reply to
questions by Major Legge-Bourke.
Attlee told Major Legge-Bourke
that within a' few minutes, June
29, President Truman was given
full information by the British
Ambassador in Washington. This
contradicts a statement by a For-
eign Office spokesman that the
U. S. Government had been in-
formed beforehand but was not
consulted.
Pressure by American oil com-
panies and air lines, and Ameri-
can universities in Beirut and Cai-
ro for a pro-Arab solution in Pal-.
estine has determined President
Truman's party managers to pre-
vent him from committing him-
self and his party to a stand on
the Palestine issue which may be
fatal to the success of the next
election, Richard H. S. Crossman,
Labor MP and member of the
Anglo-American Inquiry Commit-
tee on Palestine, declares in an
article in the New Statesman.
