An Appeal to Detroit Zionists
For $2,000,000 Allied Drive

By WILLIAM HORDES

President, Jewish National Fund Council of Detroit

The Detroit Emergency $2,000,000 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign will be reaching out into the community within a
couple of weeks.
Three great causes are included in the drive: The Am-
erican Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, the United
Palestine Appeal and the National Refugee
Service.
These three agencies accomplish • three
great needs:
JDC provides food and shelter for the
unfortunate survivors of Europe;
• UPA is the agency that supplies the
funds for the settlement of our pioneers in
Palestine and for the upbuilding of the
Jewish Homeland.
NRS cares for the needs of newcomers

to this country.

The Jewish National Fund and the Keren Hayesod are
the two major agencies of the United Palestine Appeal.
The bulk of the funds for the purchase of land in Pal-
estine comes from the United Jewish Appeal, the over-all
agency v,Thich is now conducting the national $100,000,000
campaign.
The Detroit $2,000,000 Allied Jewish Campaign is
Detroit's contribution to this great fund.
These are simple facts indicating Detroit's obligation
to this great campaign.

What are YOU doing to help this. great drive?
Have YOU enlisted your services in this drive?
Are YOU planning to give at least twice or three times
as much as you have given in the past to assure the success
of this great drive?
This is an appeal to all supporters of the Jewish National
Fund, to all our volunteer workers, to all who are affiliated
with the Zionist organizations of Detroit, to enlist their
services at once and to give in larger proportion than ever
before.

as workers NOW, to help make a success of this great drive. In the JNF Golden Book

I appeal to you to make your contributions at once, to enlist

The survivors in Europe depend upon us to raise the
necessary funds so that they may live; so that they may not
lose hope, so that Palestine may be opened to them for their
eventual settlement there.
The time to act is NOW.
Do not delay.
This is a challenge to your conscience and none of us
dares fail in this great responsibility.

Begin JNF Forest in

Wilderness of Negev

GAZA, (Palcor)—A striking
example of what a Jewish settle-
ment's effort can achieve in the
Negev wilderness, which is about
half the area of Palestine and
currently virtually uninhabited,
was shown to visitors, including
Arab notables from neighboring
villages, who came to Kibbutz
Gvar-Am, near Gaza, for cere-
monies establishing a Keren
Kay-emeth, Jewish National
Fund, forest there.
Kibbutz Gvar-Am continued
developing the arid land at the
time of the greatest danger to
Palestine, when Rommel was ad-
vancing in Egypt. Since then,
the area of 4,100 dunams has be-
come farmland, already produc-
ing cereals, citrus and orchard
fruits, garden vegetables and
pOultry. The settlement possesses
a stable, a workshop and a deep
well, which can irrigate large
areas that can support hundreds
of families.
The Kibbutz was organized
eleven years ago under the name
1VIachar, and was composed of
eighteen members from Czecho
slovakia, Germany and Holland.
It now totals 250 persons.

Inscribe Kenneth Shevin's
Name in Sefer HaYeled

A group of friends, while visit-
ing in Florida, inscribed the name
of Kenneth Shevin, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Irving Shevin, in the Sefer
HaYeled, the Children's Golden
Book of the Jewish National Fund.

World Zionists Certain
To Meet in Palestine

1,-

JERUSALE M, (WNS)—Moshe
Shertok, chief of the political
department of the Jewish Agen-
cy, declared here that the
agency's executive is determined
to have the forthcoming World
Zionist Congress convene in Pal-
estine on Aug. 7, no matter what
the political situation may be at
the time or what decisions may
be made in the interim.
It is believed here that the
statement was intended as a re-
ply to the decision of the Zionist
Organization of America, whose
administrative council approved
a resolution requesting that the
World Zionist Congress be held
in the U. S.

Chrysler Sales Corp. of Detroit Plants 25 Trees in Palestine
in Memory of Abraham Robins; Many Contribute
to Golden Book for Arthur H. Serwer

An interesting development in
the spread of the popularity of
the Jewish National Fund is the
report made this week by the
Jewish Natitonal Fund Council
that non-Jews have made gifts
to the fund in memory of Jewish
friends.
Recognizing the established
traditional practice in Jewish
ranks of refraining from send-
ing flowers in memory of de-
ceased, and of contributing in-
stead to worthy causes, the fol-
lowing have demonstrated their
interest in the land-purchasing
agency of the Zionist movement:

Chrysler Sales Corporation of
Detroit planted 25 trees in Pales-
tine in memory of Isidore Hei-
man of Gloversville, N. Y.
The girls of the Detroit De-
partment of Buildings planted
nine trees in Palestine in memory
of Abraham Robins.
The name of Arthur H. Serwer
was memoralized with an inscrip-
tion in the Golden Book of the

Jewish National Fund by a group
of restaurant and food suppliers
through the efforts of Alex
Schreier.
