Serviceman in June
Officers, committee chairmen and board members of the
Detroit Women's Division of the American Jewish Congress honor-
ed Mrs. Emma Lazaroff Schaver, who is leaving on a concert tour
Of the Displaced Persons Camps in Germany for the World Jewish
Congress, at a luncheon at Wardell-Sherton Hotel on Jan. 30. Mrs.
Schaver was presented with a purse with which to purchase Purim
gifts f6r European Jewish children.
Miss Rita Cantor of Pasadena Ave. left with her aunt and uncle,
Mr. and Mrs. S. Bankle and daughter, Theda, for an extensive vaca-
tion in Miami Beach.
Mr. and Mrs. Jule Kraft and son of 18701 Northlawn have left
for a month's stay in Miami Beach.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Robbins of 4276 W. Buena Vista will
have open house from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday in honor of their sister
and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Berish Friedman, who are 1eay4ng
for California where they will reside. No cards.
Mr. and Mrs. Julian Zemon of Wildemere Ave. left on Wednes-
day for New York City; where they will visit with members of
their family.
Mr. and Mrs. Nate Shapero of Strathcona Dr. and Mr. • and Mrs.
Sidney Allen of Lincolnshire Rd. left for Bocaraton, Fla., for a
few weeks' stay.
Mr. and Mrs . Hoke Levin of Boston Blvd. are spending a
few weeks in Cal ifornia.
Mrs. Marks Horwitz of Denver, Colo. is visiting her son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. Shurly Horwitz of Oak Dr.
Mrs. Rose Lipson of Merton Rd. is spending a few weeks in
New York City.
Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Srere of Boston Blvd. are vacationing
in Bocaraton, Fla.
Mrs. Myron Steinberg of Webb Ave. has returned from Los
Angeles, where she visited with members of her family.
Mrs. Morse Sailson of Virginia Pk. is spending a few weeks
in Miami Beach with her mother, Mrs. Joseph Wetsman, who
is there for the winter.
Miss Carol Landau, a senior at the University of Illinois, ac-
companied her mother, Mrs. Maurice Landau, to New York City
from where she will go to Oklahoma City to be a bridesmaid at
a classmate's wedding before returning to her studies in Cham-
paign, Ill.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben-Zion Gotlib of Flint are spending the week
with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Tobin of the Book-Cadillac
Hotel, before going on for a vacation in New York City. Mr. Gotlib,
who served as a sergeant with the U. S. Army for the last 3 1/2
years, recently received his discharge.
Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Miller of Chicago spent the last week-
end with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel N. Lipchinsky of
Leslie Ave. and Mr. and Mrs. Hyman Miller of Calvert Ave.
Miss Elaine Weisman, ivho is attending the University of Illin-
ois, is spending the in-between semester vacation with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Simon Weisman of Leslie Ave.
Capt. Louis Grabow has returned to his home in New York
after a week's visit with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and
Mrs. Irving Goldman of Muirland Ave. Capt. Grabow, who has
been in service four years, including 11/2 years in the ETO, is
now on terminal leave.
Miss Harriet Bakst of 2511 Monterey has returned from a two
week's stay in New York.
Cpl. Robert S. Eppstein, who has been in service 2 1/2 years, in -
cluding 18 months in. China, Burma and India, has received his
discharge and with Mrs. Eppstein and their small daughter, Landra,
are making their home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abraham
Eppstein of Fullerton Ave.
Mrs. David Diamond of Longfellow Ave. has returned from
Memphis, Tenn., where she visited her son-in-law and daughter,
Dr. and Mrs. Harvey Lynn.
Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Cooper of Chicago Blvd. have returned
from a month's stay in Miami Beach, Fla.
Lt. (sg) Howard M. Sherman, who has served with the U. S.
Naval Dental Corps for the last 32 months, including 81/2 months
in the Philippines and Japan, is now on terminal leave and with
Mrs. Sherman is for the present making his home with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hartman of Chicago Blvd. His brother S/1/c'
11/kartin Sherman, who has been stationed at Great Lakes Training
Center, is spending a short leave with their parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Morris Sherman of Calvert Ave., before leaving for overseas.
Lt. Marshall D. Shulman has returned from Manila and is at
home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Shulman of
Webb Ave.' .
Mrs. R. R. Kallman of Boston Blvd. has left for a vacation in
Florida.

Misery of Displaced Jews

D, Roosevelt arriving here this
week after a tour of displaced
persons camps in the U. S. zone
told a press conference that her
visits to the camps had distressed
her very much, particularly her
experiences at the Zeilsheim
camp for displaced Jews. "The
misery in all the camps is ter-
rible, but the misery of the Jews
is something I'll never, never
forget," Mrs. Roosevelt declared.

Young Israel Women
Plan Purim Program
Women's League of Young
Israel will sponsor a "Night of
Games" and Purim program Sat-
urday March 10 at Rosenberg's,
Dexter at Boston. Proceeds will
be allocated to the maintenance
of the Young Israel Youth pro-
gram, sponsored by the Women's
League.
The "Games" committee in-
cludes Mrs. David Applebaum,
chairman; Mrs. Abbe A. Levi and
Mrs. Max Weisberg. The pro-
gram will be under the direc-
tion of Mrs. M. J. Wohlgelern-
ter.

4,500 Food Packages Sent
to Russia By Jewish Union
The Union of Russian Jews,
Inc., 55 W. 42nd St., New York

Shaw Returns as Director
after 3 Years in the Navy;
Plans for Summer
Fresh Air Camp, again under
the directorship of Irwin Shaw,
announces that it is accepting ap-
plications for positions on its
counselor staff. Applications may
be obtained in room 306 of the
Detroit Community Fund Bldg.,
51 W. Warren, at the Jewish Cen-
ter, 8904 Woodward, or by calling
the Fresh Air Camp, TE. 1-1600.
After an absence of three years
during which time he served as
lieutenant in the Navy, Shaw re-
turns to the post he held from
1936 until the outbreak of the
war. Now administrative assist-
ant on the executive staff of the
Jewish Welfare Federation, he
will be available to the camp by
a special arrangement between
the Federation and the Fresh Air
Society, one of its constituent
agencies.
A counselors' institute will be
held at the camp, June 23 to July
1. The 1946 season will be divid-
ed into three-week periods: July
1-22, July 22-Aug. 12, and Aug.
12-Sept. 1. Camper registrations
will not be taken until the end
of April.
Applications for positions on
the kitchen and maintenance
staffs will be taken after March 1.
