Outstanding Jewish
Musicians in City
Organize Hashofar

Hashofar, Society for the Ad-
vancement of Jewish music, has
been organized by outstanding
Jewish musicians of Detroit.
Purposes of Hashofar will be:
1. To enable those musicians
and laymen who are interested in
the history and development of
Jewish music to gather at monthly
meetings" to hear, discuss and
perform. the better type of Jew-
ish music.
2. To present to larger audiences
from time to time such Jewish
music which Hashofar deems
worthy of performing. Member-
ship is open. to professional
musicians as well as laymen.
Dues are $3 a year to profession-
al as well as non-professional

Joseph Schildkraut (who can
ever forget his portrayal of Drey-
fus in "The Life of Emil Zola")
recently put under contract by
Republic studios on a two-a-year
deal, has signed a supplementary
contract with the studio calling
for at least three features a year.
Joe is now appearing in "Flame
of the Barbary CoaSt" with John
Wayne.

She Doesn't Look Right

The vaudeville or minstrel
gag, "That was no lady; that was
my wife," was being told among
Jews in Poland hundreds of
years ago. In a different frame,
naturally. It ran like this:
Chaim's wife was pretty sick.
Every day she seemed to be get-
ting worse. He met his friend
Hennoch and complained: "I
don't like the way my wife looks
right now."
"Say, I never like the way my
wife looks," was Hennoch's re-
sponse.

A Holiday
Message

Sucher Bros.

301 S. Fort Rood

Hon. Harry. F. Kelly

Governor of the State of Michigan

"The holiday of Rosh Hashanah in this year of
total victory calls for somethings more than felici-
tations to the Jewish communities from their fel-
low-citizens of other creeds. This is a day for
action, not words; for deeds rather than promises.
By our prayers and by our constant effort we
can hasten the day when the Jewish people of
`darkened Europe can resume their rightful place
in the society of free men."
