Mr. and Mrs. John L. Brown and their daughters, Sheity,
Barbara and Sandra, of Strathcona Dr., returned on Monday from
a fortnight in Mackinac Island where they were guests at the
Grand Hotel.
Mrs. Himon Kaplan of Roslyn Rd. has returned from Los
Angeles where she spent the last six weeks visiting her son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Kaplan, and her brOther
and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. David G. Lieberman.
Mrs. Freimark Manko returned to her home in New York City
on Tuesday after an extended visit with her children, Mr. and
Mrs. Adolph Haas of Renfrew Rd. and Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Manko
of Calvert Ave.
Mrs. Oscar A. Kaufman of Strathcona Dr. has returned from
a week's stay at Sunset Isle in Goderich, Ont.
Complimenting Miss Alice Shaw of Cleveland, the fiancee of
her son, Lt. Ivan Jacobson, and her, niece, Miss Sherry Brown
who will become the bride of James P. Buhai Y 2/c on Aug. 30,
Mrs. Harry Jacobson will give a tea this Saturday afternoon at her
home in Chicago Blvd.
Miss Dorothy Sloman and Mrs. Carrie Mae Berger of Dexter
Blvd. have returned from a cruise to Saguenay Bay.
Mrs. A. W. Schloss of Los Angeles is spending a month in
Detroit visiting with friends. She is a guest at the Wardell-Sheraton
Hotel.

Mr. and Mrs. James Rachleff (Esther Sherman) of 15363 Rose-
lawn Ave. are holding open house on Aug. 27 from 2 p. m. to 6 p. m.
At that time they will bid farewell to their friends and relatives
prior to their making their home in Hartford, Conn.
Mr. and Mrs. Murray Purnell of Wisconsin Ave. will entertain
at a farewell party Saturday, Aug. 26 in honor of Mr. and Mrs.
James Rachleff who are leaving to make their home in Hartford,
Conn.

Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Morris of Burlingame Ave. left last Thurs-
day for a two-week visit in Charlevoix.
Mr. and Mrs. Wallace of Berkeley Rd. entertained at a lawn
party at their home in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary.
On Wednesday evening, Aug. 16, they gave a dinner party for the
family at Club Royale. Their son, Sgt. Melvin Wallace, who is sta-
tioned at Camp Kearns, Utah, came home on furlough for this
occasion.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Yanich, of 2319 Leslie Ave. were honored
on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary at a surprise
party given by their children, Mr. and Mrs. Walter H. Plaut (Hadas-
sah Yanich) and Pvt. Joseph I. Yanich. The_ names of Mr. and Mrs.
Yanich were inscribed in the Golden Book of the Jewish National
Fund by their children, the Abraham Beitner family and Mrs. Jenny
Yanitz. The couple were honored by the planting of 18 trees (Hai)
in the Leon Blum Colony by guests.
Pvt. Joseph I. Yanich has returned to Camp Polk, La. after
spending a 12-day furlough with his family.
Pvt. Edwin Lieberman, son of ,Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lieberman
of Birchcrest Dr., left on Aug. 16 for his post with the Marines at
Camp Pierce, S. C. -

Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hartman and their son, Arthur, of
Shrewsbury Rd. left on Sunday for New York where they will
spend a week.

Although Jewish civilian stu-
dent enrollment is considerably
smaller this year, Bnai Brith
Hillel Foundations at some 130
colleges and universities through-
out the country are determined
to achieve their $50,000 quota in
behalf of the United Jewish Ap-
peal f o r Refugees, Overseas
Needs and Palestine.
Student campaigns conducted
at eight Bnai Brith Hillel units
raised $10,035 for the United
Jewish Appeal and a number of
other Jewish domestic and over-
seas causes and war service
agencies. The campaign totals
were: Michigan, $2,100; Ohio
State, $2,400; Pennsylvania State
College, $1,509; Wisconsin,
$1,017; Minnesota, $1,505; Brook-
lyn, $291; Rutgers, $113; North
Carolina, $1,100.
A check for $100 contributed
to the United Jewish Appeal by
the women members of the jun-
ior class at the University of
Michigan as well as contributions
from other non-Jewish students
living in student cooperatives
and from Jewish servicemen Sta-
tioned at the university and at
nearby Willow Run Air Base
were included in the $2,100
raised by the Hillel Foundation
at Ann Arbor. This year's total
represents an increase of $500
over last year when the Jewish
civilian enrollment was 800 as
compared with650 this year.

Center to Start
Classes in Art

Series of Courses Will Open
on Sept. 10; Lower Fees
for Members

Mrs. David B. Werbe, chairman
of the art committee of the Jew-
ish Community Center, an-
nounces the opening of the Fall
series of art classes.
The Sunday morning life class
will open Sunday, Sept. 10, at 10
a, m., with Leon Makielski as
teacher.
The Tuesday life class, also
with Mr. Makielski as teacher,
will begin Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.
The elementary drawing and
painting class will meet on Tues-
day and Thursdays at 4 p. m., be-
ginning Sept. 7, with Stanley
Twardowicz as instructor.
A new class this season, in clay
modeling, will have its opening
session Sept. 13, at 7:30 p. m.
Lillian Desow will be the teacher.
The fee for the 18-week se•
mester is $7.50 for Center mem-
bers and $10 for non-members.
Registrations are now being
taken at the Center office.
