With speakers representing
the Jewish Community Council
visiting constituent organizations
and with other speakers address-
ing radio audiences, the work
of interpreting the Community
Council is continuing into the
month of May. Because of the
large number of organizations
involved it has not been possible
to complete the program during
April.
While some organizations have
been visited by speakers as-
signed by the internal relations
committee a n d the Yiddish
speakers bureau without ad-
vance arrangements, most of the
addresses have resulted from
specific requests made through
the Community Council office.
Take Assignments
Among those who have taken
speaking assignments are Joseph
Bernstein, co-chairman of the
internal relations committee;
Alex Belkin, Mrs. A. H. Brodie,
David J. Cohen, James I. Ell-
mann, William Hordes, Joshua
Joyrich, Dr. Schmarya Klein-
man, Benjamin • M. Laikin, Miss
Goldie Levinstein, Samuel Lie-
berman, Frank Mersky, Abraham

man, Isidore Sosnick, and Rabbi
Max J. Wohlgelernter and Isaac
Franck, Gerson B. Chertoff and
Abraham Cohen of the Commu-
nity Council staff.
During Passover and Sabbath
services a number of Detroit's
rabbis devoted sermons to a dis-
cussion of the value and activi-
ties of the Community Council.
Those who reported participa-
tion in this program are Dr: B.
Benedict Glazer, chairman of
the internal relations committee,
RabbiS Leon. Frain, Jacob Hober-
man,- Joshua S. Sperka, Isaac

ered over station WJLB and
WJBK by Messrs. Bcrnstein,

vine. Additional radio addresses
are •scheduled over station WJLB
for this weekend, with Rabbi
Fram discussing the community
relations program of the Council
on Saturday evening at 9 p.m.
and Mr. Rosenberg describing
.internal relations and cultural
activities on Sunday at 1 p.m.
In connection with the ob-
servance of Jewish Community
Council Month a reprint of the
article by Lawrence W. Crohn
which appeared in the Recon-
structionist, under the title "In-
ternal Jewish Discipline," has
been mailed to Council delegates
and officers of constituent or-
ganizations. The Council has pre-
Pared two leaflets in English
and Yiddish in question and an-
swer form, describing aspects of
the work of the Community
Council. These leaflets will be
made available to the commu-
nity.
-
Organizations are urged to
contact the Community Council
office to arrange for the assign-
ment 'of a speaker to address
them on the structure and func-
tion of the Community Council.
Speakers are qualified to answer
questions about the Council.
They invite constructive critir
cism which is reported to ap-
propriate committees of t h e
Council for action.
Use of Instrumental Music in
Orthodox and Conservative
Synagogues
All instrumental music in di-.
vine services was abolished as
a sign of mourning after the de-
struction of the Temple. T h e
organ was first introduced into
the Berlin synagogue in 1815,
and aroused a storm of protest
which endured many years. Re-
form and some congregations of
the Conservative branches of
Judaism no longer bar use of
such music.
