Use of Instrumental Music in Orthodox and Conservative Synagogues All instrumental music in di-. vine services was abolished as a sign of mourning after the de- struction of the Temple. T h e organ was first introduced into the Berlin synagogue in 1815, and aroused a storm of protest which endured many years. Re- form and some congregations of the Conservative branches of Judaism no longer bar use of such music.
