"Race Riot" is "a book for civi-
lized people, not only to read—
but to use as a weapon against
the barbarians indicted in it." .
It is the least that can be said
about the factual review of the
events that took place in Detroit
last June as compiled by Profs.
Alfred McClung Lee and Norman
Daymond Humphrey of Wayne
University, under the title "Race
Riot," and published by the Dry.7 .
den Press, 103 Park Ave., New
York. • •• •
"Race Riot" -is a factual expose
of the Detroit events. It . is, based
on testimony of eyewitnesses and
was written as a weapon against
the recurrence of these events.
Prevention of race riots. is one
of the aims of the authors, who
quote a Negro woman as saying,
"There ain't no North any more.
Everything now is South." And
because of the effective appeal
they make that there should be
no North nor South in a better
and secure future but "just the
L nited States," their, book• is a
great contribution to the fight
for decency.
"Race Riot" alms to have the
average man " understand - the
symptoms and causes of race
riots so that they should be pre-
pared to take action against them.
They urge constant fact-finding,
they encourage- the functions of
good-will inter-faith committees,
they warn against complacency.
Among actions they recommend
in the event riots break out are:
Immediate invitation to state
militia or U. S. Army to act to
prevent bloodshed, quarantineing
of race riot area, :keeping chit
dren in school Since youngsters
have taken a leading part in the
riots here, disseminate accurate
repo rts.

were mine;
Why did they then their motherland
forget,
Unfaithful, unremembering and yet
Forget them not could I, • but quite
forlorn,
Awaited long their far off prayer horn.
At last I saw the promise of the day.
My ancient ears now heard a rounde-
la y .
But not of joy; the tones more like :
a dirge
The sufferers murmur underneath the
scourge.
And then I heard the shuffling- of feet.
Whose dragging, blood-filled tracks
marked the defeat
Of human happiness, and as before
The suffering of my sons again I bore.
Took them again unto my withered
breast,
Where no milk flowed, behold again
as blest
The milk and honey plentiful became,
And multitudes arose to bless a Name,
And rivers sprang from out the desert
sand,
"
And crystal *waters rose from rock
strewn land:
My ancient worn out body born anew,
The motherland of the returning Jew.
