The Underground Heroes

Underground forces fighting Nazism - within Poland in-
elude Jewish heroes whose epic story is certain to reveal
some of the most impressive acts of heroism of this war.
The latest report reaching the Polish government-in-
exile in London states that a Jewish guerilla army is harass-
ing the Nazis in the Lublin sector. Battling under the Jewish
blue-and-white emblem and the Polish flag, and using Yid-
dish as its official tongue, this army, under the leadership of
a former Polish officer who uses the psudonym "Gutt," has
been named in honor of Berek Yoselevich, Jewish hero of the
Polish revolt of 1861. .
Equipped with machine guns, artillery and its own field
hospital, this army is credited with .having killed 5,000 Ger-
man officers and soldiers. In a surprise raid on Mauszov, a
village near Lublin, the Jewish guerillas freed 120 Jews and
Poles who were awaiting execution at the hands of the
Nazis.
It is also reported from London that an underground
tunnel, constructed by Jews, served as a supply line for the
transport of arms to the Warsaw ghetto during the revolt last
spring.
In the Polish underground, in all of the United Nations
armies, on the Italian and African fronts, in the air, on land
and sea, Jewish heroes are fighting side by side with our
valiant Allies for the liberation of the world. We pray that
they should not remain "the forgotten ally" when the conflict
is over.

The Fourth War Loan

We are nearer to victor _ y today than we were a year ago.
But victory continues to depend upon the effort we all
make to help win the war.
All our resources must be thrown into the fight to
guarantee triumph for the democratic way of life.
This means that every available dollar must be invested
in War Bonds.
The Fourth War Loan is now in progress.
It renews the challenge to every American to support
the government with voluntary investments for victory.
Back the attack—and buy more and more War Bonds.
An entire month has been set aside for the Fourth War
Loan campaign. The goal for Michigan should be reached
far in advance of the final date. •
Oversubscription of the goal should be the aim of every

Wise Teacher

In ancient times the people of
Negeb in the southern part of
Palestine, were known for their
wisdom. To test out this reputa-
tion of theirs, Alexander, the king
of Macedonia_, once called before
him a number of the wise men of
that land and put to them the
following questions:
"Tell me, U wise men, is it
further from the east to the west
or from the earth to the sky?"
"Your majesty," they replied,
"one may look at the sun when
it stands in the east or in the west
but when it stands immediately
overhead in the sky at mid-day,
it is so bright and glaring that it
is impossible to look upon it with
the naked eye. Hence, it must be
nearer when it is overhead and
thus it is evident that it is a
greater distance between the east
and west, than it is from the
earth to the sky."
"Tell me now," went on Alex-
ander, "Who is a wise man?"
"He who looks into the future,"
they replied.
"Who is a hero?" he next . in-
quired.
"He wko conquers his desires,"
they returned.
"And now tell me, who is to be
considered a rich man?"
"HQ is rich," they answered,
"who is contented with his lot."
"Your answers have indeed
been wise and as a reward I shall
make you my advisors and clad
you in purple robes.".
Says the Talmud further on the
subject:
"Get thee a wise teacher."
"Who is ashamed to ask will
never learn."
"No one can be called poor, ex-
cept one who is poor in knowl-
edge."
"It is more meritorious to as-
sociate with learned men than to
give one's self entirely up to
study."
"Be not afraid to say, 'I do not
know.' "

Brotherhood Week
Observance Urged
By Mr. Roosevelt

NEW YORK.—A special Mes7.
sage from the White House in
which President Roosevelt calls
upon all -Americans to take part
in the observance of Brother-
hood Week, Feb. 20-26, was
made public by the National
Confierence of Christians and
Jews in its announcement of the
11th annual observance of that
celebration.
More than 3,000 communities
are organized to participate in
this event. Plans have been
made to bring the message of
Brotherhood Week to hundreds
of army camps and naval bases.
The President's statement calls
Brotherhood Week "a time both
of reminder and dedication" and
states that "it dedicates us to
the practice of understanding
and justice through which free-
dom and equality flourish in
human society."
"While we are engaged in a
mighty struggle to preserve our
free institutions and to extend
the boundaries of liberty in the
earth," he declared, "it is good
for us to pledge renewed devo-
tion to the fundamentals upon
which this nation has been
built."
