British authorities in London this week . denied having
any knowledge of a plan to partition Palestine and to set
aside a portion of the land for a Jewish State.
In the meantime, anti-Zionists are proceeding with in-
sistent statements that all hopes-for a Jewish Commonwealth
will be frustrated.
Lord Strabolgi, ,a friend of the Zionist cause, this week
declared that he will demand in the House of Lords that the
British government make a clear statement on Palestine.
In Jerusalem, in an address before MAPAI, the Jewish
labor party, David 'Ben Gurion expressed himself in com-

a statement opposing the White Paper, at the same time
reiterating its stand against political Zionism..

Eliezer Kaplan, treasurer of the Jewish Agency, declared at

Weekly Review of the News of the World

(Compiled From Cables of Independent Jewish Press Service)

AMERICA
The proportion of Jews in the military
services is higher than their proportion in
the -population, it is revealed by statistics
compiled by the Bureau of War Records
set up by the Jewish Welfare Board. The
percentage of Jews in the total population
is about 3.7 but in the armed services they
are about 5 per cent.
Declaring that though "there is much
correct and righteous indignation against
appeasement . . . human wisdom has not
yet invented a better way of resolving
differences of opinion than compromise,"
the Reconstructionist, Jewish bi-weekly,
calls for some peace formula by which
the Ainerican Jewish Committee would
rejoin the American Jewish Conference.
The Chicago Tribune finds the indict-
ment of the thirty persons accused of
inciting troops to mutiny and conspiring
with Nazis to overthrow the government
a violation of the right of citizens to
"comment on public affairs." Col. McCor-
mick's paper concedes that the indicted
made the statements of which they are
accused, but claims that the propaganda
which they mouthed falls in the realm of
legitithate public comment.
PALESTINE
•-\
Warning that all "within Zionism who
opposed the Biltmore program were in
effect undermining the Zionist political
struggle," David ben Gurion who recently
resigned as chairman of the executive of
the Jewish Agency, called for "the crea-
ti,on of a Zionist regime within the Yishuv

problems." He made these statements in
the course of a five-hour address at a
special session of the National Council of
Mapai (Palestine Labor Party) in Jeru-
salem.
According to statistics compiled by the
Vaad Leumi, 377,000 Jewish worshippers
and visitors have been to the Western
Wall (Kotel Maaravi) in old Jerusalem in
the year ending last Sept. 30.
OVERSEAS
The Copenhagen Municipality recently
issued an appeal for food and clothing for
the Danish Jews who were deported to
the prison camp for Jews at Theriesen-
stadt. The response of the Danes was such
that within a short time over 100,000 kilo-
grams (220,460 pounds) of food and cic,th-
ing were contributed. The Nazi pies" in
Denmark has become indignant and now
demands from the Copenhagen comm , m-
ity "compensation" in the form of similar
gifts for Germans suffering from the Al-
lied air raids.
Jewish children are being readmitted
to elementary and secondary schools in
Slovakia, the pro-Nazi Slovak press cf -,m-'
plains. This is being done in violation of
Aryan legislation.
A play with a Jewish theme by the
distinguished British novelist and rfay-
wright, J. B. Priestly, is now being pro-
duced by two British government agen-
cies, the Army Bureau of Current_ Affairs
and the Council for the Encouragement
of Music and the Arts.

Let's Do Our Part to End Quickly
the Horror of War • •

We Americans are engaged in a world conflict, yet we have not suffered the deprivation
and agony other civilian populations have undergone. We Americans have not yet had to
flee like rats before the modern tools of destruction. Here in America we have been
fortunate, in many respects, for the war's fury is spending itself thousands of miles
from our shores. We Americans, therefore, are all the more able to put our shoulders
to the wheel to terminate the war speedily. We are all the more able to put our resources
into War Bonds to lend impetus to our country's wartime role.
