Former Detroit JWF Director to Give Firsf Hand Account
of Jewry's Plight Wrought by Nazis, at Special
Meeting at the Center Wednesday, Jan. 26
The Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit has arranged
a special meeting for Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 8:30 p. m., at the
Jewish Community Center, Woodward at Holbrook, for a
discussion of the work of the Joint Distribution Committee
in North Africa, it was announced by Abraham Srere,
president.
The guest speaker will be Kurt
Peiser, executive director of the
Federation of Jewish Charities
and of the United Jewish Appeal
. of Philadelphia, and former di-
rector of the JWF in Detroit. He
recently returned from a six
month tour in North Africa for
the. JDC.
While there Peiser visited
Spanish Morocco, French Moroc-
co, - Algeria and Tunisia, to su-
pervise the work of the JDC in
- those areas. While in Tunisia he
Saw the devastating effects
wrought upon the Jewish com-
munity by the Nazis. He assisted
in establishing a committee of •
Tunisian Jews which began the
task of giving relief to native and
refugee Jews.
"We have all read, from time
to time, about the work . of the
JDC Committee in North Africa,
and, especially, Tunisia," Mr.
Srere stated; "but the news dis-
patches have been. sketchy. and
told little of the actual day-to-day
work of the JDC. We have invi-
. ted Mr. Peiser to •give us a de-
tailed word picture of the task
which faces the 'JDC and of the
work which has been accomplish-
ed in North Africa."
