night at the Statler Hotel.
Mr. Brown quoted Mr. Dowling
as stating:
•
"It's_ a pity the way the Negroes
are • treated in the Valley. Why
the JeWs have them living on
top of one another. The Jews own
all the food and liquor stores.
They own all the pawnshops and
get a profit of 42 per cent out of
their business in the Valley. The
Negroes in the Valley don't have
a chance under such a setup."
Repudiates Charges
Mr. Dowling states that Mr.
Brown, a Negro, . did • not take
notes in his interview with him.
He states that he first received
proofs of the Harper article last
Friday and immediately called
the editors, later sending them a
communication, repudiating the
charges and denouncing the au-
thor of the article.
As proof of his contentions, Mr.
Dowling states that contrary to
the reference to him by Mr.
Brown he is not an Irish Catholic
although he would be proud of
it if he were one.
Jews Main Sufferers
Furthermore, he declares that
an investigation showed that
Jews do not own all the liquor
stores. In his statement to Har-
per's he reiterates that Jews were
the main sufferers in the June
riot and he demands a correction
of the Brown statements "in fair-
ness to those of the Jewish faith
and in fairness to those whom I
hold responsible until today."
In his statement to The Jewish
News Mr. Dowling declares that
he stands by his Fact Finding
Report and that he did not and
does not blame Jewish merchants
for the riots.
2 Jewish Youths
Fined in Boston
Anti-Jewish Riots
BOSTON (JPS) -7- The first
sentences in the anti-Semitic
terror here were handed down
by Judge Walsh who fined two
Jewish youths, named Bloom-
stein and Hodess, $10 each -for
participation in a street affray.
Two other Jewish boys, both
minors, also were held by the
police.
Challenging the police wit-
nesses, attorneys for the two
youths expressed wonderment
that only Jews were appre-
hended. They charged that the
police sergeant who made the
arrests manhandled the defend-
ants and said that they would
present evidences to that effect.
Justice Walsh announced that
he was ready to hold the sen-
tence in abeyance for six months
on condition that the boys re-
frain from further participation
in street fights. The attorneys
refused to accept the Judge's
offer.
Despite appeals to the city
authorities to ban the meeting,
Father Charles E. Coughlin's
followers met here undeterred to
celebrate the radio priest's birth-
day. Speakers described Father
Coughlin as a "prophet" and a
"victim of intolerance" and de-
manded that "America be kept
Christian."
NEW YORK (JPS) — Blame
for the anti-Semitic terror in
Boston was placed squarely on
Fr. Charles E. Coughlin, in an
interview given here by Mrs.
Ruth O'Keefe, member of the
Massachusetts Parole Board.

GUEST EDITORIAL—
An Opportunity and An Obligation
By DR. LEO M. FRANKLIN
It is not mere rhetoric to say that the appeal for support
of the National War Fund, of which the War Chest of Metro-
politan Detroit is an integral parts, puts every American, and,
especially every Jew, on trial. The generosity of our response
to this appeal; the enthusiasm with which we give our
money, our time and our energies to the campaign; the per-
sonal interest that we manifest in the effort to raise the huge
sum of money that is needed; the sense of obligation that we
recognize to share with others in this great
humanitarian project and the feeling of privi-
lege that is ours in doing so, will be a kind of
yard-stick with which to measure the sincerity
of our profession that we regard ourselves as
the keepers of our brothers. But beyond that
it will be an attest of our loyalty to American
ideals and of our readiness to sacrifice for them
in these- unusually crucial days.
It should not be necessary to enumerate
the many and varied causes, philanthropic,
patriotic and cultural that are dependent for
their very existence upon the success of this
drive. Nor is it needed to remind any socially-
Dr. Franklin minded person that every contribution to the
War Fund is a means of strengthening the bond of brother-
hood and of establishing between the various social, economic,
racial and religious groups in Detroit an obvious sense of
their interdependence.
Heretofore the record of the people of Detroit, as sup-
porters of worthwhile social causes, has been reasonably
creditable. In most community drives we have reached the
goal set or we have gone over the top. And generally speak-
ing the Jews of the community have not been found wanting
in the acceptance of their full measure of responsibility.
This is, of course, as it should be. In the first place many—
indeed most of our Jewish agencies—are among the ben-
eficiaries of the Fund and we shall want not only to con-
tribute at least as much as we receive for these agencies, but
enough in addition to make up our fair contribution to the
non-sectarian and patriotic projects whose work is sponsored
or supported by the Fund.
The amount asked for this year is far in excess of that
of any previous campaign. But so, too, is the need that
confronts us—and may we add—so, too, is the opportunity
for generous giving on the part of a vast majority of the
people.
There is reason to hope and to believe that in this cam-
paign Detroit will maintain and even exceed its previous
record of generosity and its sense of social responsibility.
And in the writing of this proud record may the Jews of this
area be privileged to take a leading part.
