gave last year
Thousands of young men, now offering their lives
on other fronts, gave to the War Chest last year;
the money they contributed amounted to a large sum.
The War Chest must look to women to make up what our Fighting Men
gave last year. Every woman must help. Every woman must feel it her
responsibility to contribute as an individual in her own right; and to give
as much as she possibly can. Women of Detroit, open your hearts and your
purses—give generously from your own personal funds, income, earnings,
or budget.
This year suffering humanity needs help more than ever before. Piteous,
broken peoples look to us for help and hope We must not fail them.
Housewives, you would give from your household budget if you were there
. you wouldn't refuse bread and milk to that starving child just across
the way, in China, Poland, or Greece . .. or a cup of coffee, a bit of
comfort, to a weary soldier, alone and lonely, far from home. And you'd
open your heart and your purse to that neglected orphan, just down the
other street.
Cries of angaish, echoing around the world, pierce the security of every
home. Hear these calls for help; give to the War Chest and answer them
all. Give generously—plan some little economies in your household budget
to make it up. If every housewife gives all she can, it will help so much.
Every woman would figure out some say to give more if she knew the
miracles 'of mercy wrought by contributions to the War Chest . . . if she
knew how her dollars would help spread compassion and comfort around
the world—to our Allies, our Neighbors, our Fighting Men.
Wouldn't you forego some luxury, even scrimp a little, to bring comfort
to some mother's son in a prison camp? Wouldn't your heart urge you to
sacrifice a little to help a cripple walk again—or to bring a ray of hope
to a despairing mother in a war-torn land?
Count your blessings. Women of Detroit • . then let your heart tell
you what to give.
