EDITORIAL

An Effective Appeal

On previous occasions, The Jewish News has condemned
conditions which have brought about duplication of effort S
in the fight for Jewish rights and in appeals being directed to
the United Nations to assure speedy action for the rescuing
of Jews who are suffering in Nazi-doMinated countries.
If we could only pool all our resources in behalf of Jew-
ish needs! Every group has something to contribute to the
common cause, and the ablest men in Jewry should be mobil-
ized to fight for justice and freedom.
We believe that with the formation of the American
Jewish Conference other groups should submerge their in-
terests to the democratically-selected Jewish body.

At the same time, however, we must give deserved
credit to one group for the effective way in which it has util-
ized paid newspaper space for appeals in the fight for the de-
fense of Jewish rights.
• The most recent advertisement of the Committee for a
Jewish Army of Stateless and Palestinian Jews; in the New
York Times, called upon readers to write to statesmen and
public officials in behalf of the campaign to "save the Jews
of Europe by opening the doors of Palestine."
The advertisement featured a "Ballad of the Doomed
Jews of Europe," written by Ben Hecht," which is so effec-
tive that we reprint it here:

FOUR MILLION JEWS waiting for death.

Oh hang and burn but—quiet, Jews!
Don't be bothersome; save your breath—
The world is busy with other news.

• .••..•.•

Four million murders are quite a smear
Even our State Department views
The slaughter with much disfavor here
But then—it's busy with other news.

You'll hang like a forest of broken trees
You'll burn in a thousand Nazi stews
And tell your God to forgive us please
For we were busy with other news.

Wishes to Extend to

This touching - ballad advises that those writing to public
officials, including the President should "ask them why the
door (to Palestine) has been closed: Ask them whether the
wor1.3. profits more from catering to the political whims of a
few Arabs than from saving the lives of millions of men,
women and children whO are dying because the doors are
shut;"

If only such pleas were given the attention they de-
serve!

Perhaps we shall get a better hearing if We Solidify our
ranks and stop splitting our resources and efforts in different
directions.

.

We can accomplish a great deal if we wbrk in harmony:
we • can hurt the Jewish cause if we permit our • ablest men
to pull for themselves, independently of the recognized
forces in Jewry.

It is high time that men like Ben Hecht, Max Lerner
and others, who possess great ability, threw in their lot
with the recognized Jewish agencies so that the best .results
can be attained through united action.
