Herzfeld, 19 years old, with a
family background which boasts
of a Union soldier in the Civil
War, did not return from the

which he had been sent—but "I
will not have died in vain," he
wrote to his proud mother. be-
fore his death.
When Jerry took his post as a
machine gunner on a cargo ship,
he wrote a letter to his mother,
Mrs. Selwyn Herzfeld, to be de-
livered to her just in case ... "I
have every reason to believe that
I will return . If I don't return,

this, I shall know that I will not
have died in vain, but have died
