Meeting in New York Adopts Declaration Affirming
Bond of Unity With Jews Throughout World
NEW YORK (JPS)—Thousands of Jews jammed
huge Madison Square Garden here, in a mass demonstra-
tion against Hitler's atrocities against the Jews, and heard
a message from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who
said that "citizens, regardless of religious allegiance, will
share in the sorrow of our Jewish fellow citizens over
the savagery of the Nazis against their helpless vistims,"
and that the American people "will hold the' perpetrators
of these crimes to strict accountability in a day of recko-
ning which will surely come."
The rally, sponsored by the
American Jewish Congress, Bnai

Committee, heard scores of rep-

"As Christians," Dr. Atkinson
said, "we are determined to fight
anti-Jewish sentiment not only
because it is shameful and de-
grading, but because we know
it is designed to divide us and
make Nazi inroads easy."
Dr. Niebuhr asserted that "it
would be an inexcusable crime
if prejudice prevented the neces-
sary measures not only for the
self-defense of the Jewish com-
munity in Palestine but for its
proper functioning in the total
community of nations, leagued
against Nazism."
The Declaration presented at
the Garden stressed that "more
than a million Jews already have
been brutally done to death by
the Nazis." Taking a solemn vow,
the mass audience proclaimed,
in the words of the Hebrew pray-
er: "Remember, .0h Lord of Jus-
tice and Mercy, the blood that
has been shed in vain. Pour out
Thy wrath upon the murderers
and banish them from under Thy
skies. Speed Thy victory and may
the light of peace, justice, truth
and fraternity rise like the
morn."
Appealing "to the leadership
of the United Nations" to "take
public cognizance of the Jewish
tragedy in Europe," the Declar-
ation pointed out that the "Jew-
ish people will emerge from the
ghettos and torture chambers of
the Nazis to live again as free
men in a free world."
