can no longer tolerate this per-

But it must be done in the

of rumor or hearsay, but only
on the basis of facts and proper

use it to compound hysteria, to
multiply confusion, to stir up

ultimate injustice, that antithesis
of democracy —the totalitarian
state. This is'Nthe voice of Com-
munism.
Like the voice of reaction, the
voice of communism speaks in
the name of "real" Americanism
and "true" democracy. But amid
all the cliches, all the flag waving,
all the phony concern for human
rights, one hears the snarling of
political jackals tearing at the
vitals of our liberties.
ADL has always made very
clear its attitude toward Fascism
and Communism. We are op-
posed to their basic philosophy,
to their methods and activities.
As important today as is dis-
avowal and repudiation of Com-
munism, is the repudiation of
those responsible for using the
threat of Communism to paralyze
democratic progress which almost

these doctrines will warn you not

THE OTHER SIDE of the coin
of guilt by association is the even
more dangerous doctrine of inno-
cence by repudiation — repudia-
tion of anything however good,
however worthy, that anyone
without the slightest justification
can label Communist. If these
two doctrines become the stand-
ards of judgment, millions of
Americans will have no safe-

Does a man seek immunity

Then they will urge you to join
the Ku Klux Klan, support Ger-

K. Hart. For in their eyes, these
and these alone are above sus-
picion, are the only "real" Amer-
icans, the 150 per cent Americans.

IS THIS THE kind of America
we want? Is this what we have
fought to create through the 175
years of arduous struggle to as-
sure those freedoms we enjoyed
and which are so threatened to-
day? No, I think that would be
disloyalty to America. I think
that would be treason. I think
that would be betrayal of every-
thing this nation means to us, to
people throughout the world.
Is it not time that we reaffirm,
as we did in 1932, that this nation
has nothing to fear but fear it-
self? Is it not time that we
brushed aside the sowers of de-
spair and the breeders of con-
fusion? Is it not time that we
drown out these voices with the
third voice the • voice of the
democratic majority of' the Amer-
ican people?
Those truly dedicated to the
principles of freedom, those who
are aware of the danger which
democracy in America faces, must
arouse all Americans to an under-
standing of the urgency of the
situation.
The answer to assaults upon
democracy is more democracy.
The beet weapon against both
Communism and reaction at home
is democracy. The best all-out
weapon against Communism and
Fascism abroad is more and more
democracy.
