`He Is My Brother's Killer!',
DP Accuses Fellow Inmate
NEW YORK — (WNS) — A
dramatic episode rocked the
Jewish section of Brooklyn this
week when a former Jewish con-
centration camp inmate accused
another of guilt in the killing of
his brother in the Muldorf death
camp.
The accuser, Benjamin Krie-
ger, who came to this country
less than a year ago, and who
is now a small fish merchant,
stood at the window of his store
when he noticed a familiar face.
He followed the man and asked
him whether he was not a former
inmate of the Muldorf camp, near
Munich. No sooner had t h e
pedestrian made an affirmative
reply to the question than the
hefty fisherman began berating
and assaulting the passerby, ac-

cusing him of having killed his
brother.
The accused, Meyer Mittleman,
proclaimed his innocence.
Frightened by the occu•ence, he
sought safety in an adjacent book
store. The accuser followed him,
and another scuffle took place.
Both men shouted at each other
at high pitch. Before long men
and women came running from
all corners and when the crowd
heard what transpired, it shouted
threats at Mittleman, who ad-
mitted having been a trusty at
the camp.
The incident ended at a police
station, where the accused denied
ever having met his accuser. He
also•refused to press a complaint
against his assailant.
The incident has stirred up
profound division of opinion in
the Jewish community of
Brownsville, and in the Jewish
press of New York. The accused
man has displayed reticence in
giving wider publicity to the in-
cident, and so „far has not given
any press interview.
Krieger t o 1 d newspapermen
at he was convinced that Mit-
man had caused the death of
hi brother just because he
sought to curry favor with the
Nazis. Krieger says the Muldorf
incident impressed itself on his
mind because it was in that camp
that he found his brother, a cob-
bler, whom he had not seen for
a long time, and whom he actual-
ly believed dead.

NEW YORK — (WNS) — Two
hundred cantors from every part
of the country and Canada gath-
ered here in convention to con-
sider the problems of their pro-
fession, including the elimination
by synagogues of the so-called
"trial hearing" practice in select-
ing cantors.
Highlighting the convention of
the Jewish Cantors and Minis-
ters were messages from Presi-
dent Truman and Gov. Dewey.
The President called religion the
basis of American democracy.
The New York governor, once a
choir boy in a Jewish temple, re-
ferred to music as one of the
greatest contributions to Amer-
ican culture.
The opening session of the con-
vention was chaired by Cantor
Louis Lipitz, who appealed to
American Jewry for a better un-
derstanding and appreciation of
the cantor's function in syna-
gogue life. Referring to the "trial
methods" employed by many
synagogues in the selection of
hazanim, Lipitz said the rehear-
sal was an insult to his calling
and evidence of shocking
responsibility."
Cantor Joshua Lind derided
the attitude of indifference pre-
vailing in many of the Jewish
communities toward the cantorial
functions of the synagogue.
