STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL
Dr. Wise's Son Viewed as a Worthy Successor
By PHINEAS J. BIRON
11 IS STILL difficult for us to realize that we live
in a Wise-less world. We miss the incisive wit and
the stentorian voice of the one and only Stephen Wise
and above else we miss hid leader-
ship.
The other day while in Wash-
ington we dropped in at the Cosmos
Club, Washington's oldest and most
respectable club. A meeting under
the auspices of Prof. Einstein and
Thomas Mann was being held. The
purpose was to find peace alterna-
tives to the Atlantic Pact.
And then as we sat there we
suddenly heard the voice of Stephen
S. Wise thundering against war, la-
menting the divisions between races
Biron
and nations and concluding his oration with a char-
acteristic Wisian epigram: "What we need is less
pacts and more pax."
The speaker was James Waterman Wise, son of
Rabbi Wise. His strong words for peace were in a
sense, the continuation of Dr. Wise's last statement in
which he aligned himself without reservation with
the liberal forces struggling against the military
political warmongering.
Jimmy Wise has graduated into the major league.
He can drop the junior and stand on his own feet.

PREMIER BEN GURION is
more magnanimous than he is
credited with being. In a recent
debate in the Knesset he was
harshly handled by an opposition
leader.
Under the rules speakers are
given only five minutes. When
the speaker of the • Knesset tried
to stop the Mapam spokesman
when his time was over, Ben
Gurion arose and actually plead-
ed for an extension of time.
The speaker of the Assembly
naturally complied with the re-

American Ambassador McDonald
was invited for Friday evening
tea with Ben Friedman, Ameri-
can Mizrachi leader. Friedman
stayed in a room on the upper
floor of a hotel.
When the ambassador reached
the hotel he refused to be taken
up on the elevator. He told sur-
prised onlookers that he won't
desecrate the Sabbath while on
the way to visit a religious Jew.

The tale begins in a Turkish

WORTHY THIEVES
CRUEL THIEVES . recently
broke into an orphanage in Tel
Aviv and carried off a radio
which had been donated to the
orphans. The crime was com-
mitted on a Sabbath, when the
children and their caretakers
were at prayer.

RABBI JACOB J. WEINSTEIN writes in the May
27 issue of the "Reconstructionist" about "The Jewish
Conception of Love and Marriage as Compared with
the Western Romantic Tradition." We are afraid that
the Rabbi's wisdom about love and marriage will not
please our romantic youth in Israel and for that
matter In other countries.
The Rabbi believes in the marriage broker, in
the selection of the right mate of the social caste
with the same family background. He objects to what
he calls "the romantic fever notion of love." He re-
Bards that "fever notion" as a "great enemy of mar-
riage and as incompatible with marriage."
Romance, love, to our Rabbi, is Hollywood stuff.
"To few," laments the Rabbi, "are mature enough to
accept the fact that marriage must kill romance if
the marriage is to survive."
In other words Rabbi Weinstein insists that the
practical Shadchan marriage is preferable. What do
you think?
We shall be glad to publish your views on this
rather important question.
THE MAY 28 issue of Collier's magazine carried
a rather unusual article . . . It was authored by
George Kent under the title of "The 25 Men Who
Rule the World."
Of course, among the 25 super-rulers were listed
Stalin, Churchill, Truman, the pope, Mao Tse-Tung,
Franco and so forth. Nothing extraordinary about
these names. They are powerful rulers who decide
the fate of millions of men and women.
The big surprise in the list of super-rulers was
the name of Chaim Weizmann, president of Israel,
Weizmann who had the toughest time getting a hear-
ing for the. Jewish people, Weizmann who in his
seventies has to travel to far continents to help raise
a few million dollars for the starving DP's.
How come, we wondered, that Kent, who surely
knows about Weizmann's heartaches, included Weiz-
mann in his 25?
Finally it dawned on us that George Kent is a
victim of the type of propaganda that claims for the
Jewish people and its leaders international influence
OFF THE RECORD
HY FORRESTAL'S death
should have been turned into
a Jewish issue by the New York
Times reporter is a mystery. '
A newspaper that boasts of ob-
jectivity in news reporting should
not have permitted columnesque
stuff in so serious a matter.
There have been occasions in-
deed when Forrestal was criti-
cised for his stand on the Pales-
tine question. This writer can-
not recollect a single instance
where Forrestal's personality or
even sincerity was questioned by
those who disliked his Palestine
views.
To intimate, as the Times re-
porter did, that one of the factors
contributing to Forrestal's emo-
tional instability was the charge
that he liked oil better than Jews
is .simply speaking, a travesty.

a
when they gave him the price he
first demanded. But the captain
showed no mercy. It was either
more or else he would toss them
off the vessel, the captain in-
sisted.
When no additional money was
forthcoming, the captain placed
the 30 passengers at the mercy
of the sea. He put them on a small
raft, deaf to their pleas for mercy.
Those who resisted were beaten
with stick and club and gun by
the crew.
The angry sea ripped the raft,
and there was no hope for the
men unless help came soon. Some
swam. Others held on to the re-
mains of the raft alisi floated.
After struggling with the sea
for hours, the desperate men
were brought to Israel's shores by
Israeli marine police who were
patrolling that area. Only 2.3 told
the tale. The rest are among those
who no longer tell tales.
