Dr. Weizmann l The Last Word

AMERICA'S GREAT statesmen

" have often been marked by
the possession of a strong sense
of humor. Lincoln seemed to tell
more stories than a professional
comedian. Franklin was prob-
ably the greatest story teller in
America of his day. Wilson and
Roosevelt liked to illustrate a
point with a story.
Perhaps of the four mentioned,
Chaim Weizmann most parallels
Franklin, who was a scientist as
well as statesman. Weizmann can
regale one with stories of the
Yeshiah Bachur and Jewish life
of his early days in Russia as
Lincoln icould of the frontiers-
men of the west.
Weizmann tells stories as Lin-
coln told them to illustrate a
point. Speaking thus, for instance,
once of the faculty logic of a cer-
tain Jewish leader, Weizmann re-
marked that it reminded him of
the Yeshiah Bachur who was
given a present of a pillow for his
almost bare bed. The donor of
the pillow thought the Yeshiah
Bachur would beam with grati-
tude. But instead, he handed the
pillow back.
"Madoch," he argued, "I know
that sleeping on one feather is
hard. How much more hard
would it be to sleep on a whole
pillow of them!"
