Barron Wins
Tourney With
Little Trouble
By FRANK BECKMAN
AMERICAN JEWRY can. claim
only one golfer of any real
renown, but he is a marksman
who has few peers. '
We are speak-
ing of Herman
Barron of
White Plains,
N. Y., who last
week added to
an already im-
pressive record
by walking off
with the Good-
all Round Rob-
in tourney at
Beckman
New Rochelle,
N. Y.
Barron scored a plus 38 in his
five rounds of competition
against the cream of the crop.
This means that he won 38 more
holes than he lost in match play
• against the 15 other men in the
field.
Herman took a first-day lead
and kept adding to his margin
throughout the meet. The vic-
tory was worth $2,000.

Nahem With Phils
SAM NAHEM, a Syrian Jew,
has been added to the Philadel-
phia Phillies' pitching staff.
A relief hurler, Nahem was
far from impressive in his first
appearance against Brooklyn.
He walked five and gave up
two hits in the two innings he
worked.
However, he was much better
in his next assignment, yielding
,but two hits in three innings
Lgainst Chicago and receiving
credit for the victory.
Sam, now 31, had been pitch-
ing for the semi-pro Brooklyn
Lushwicks since he came out of
the army in March, 1946. He
entered the major leagues with
Brooklyn in 1940, was traded to
the Cardinals and was with the
Phillies before entering the
service.

As soon as the new Jewish State of Israel was proclaimed, hundreds of the 28,000 Jewish re-
fugees on Cyprus, such as those shown above, started the long-awaited journey to their Home-
land. To make possible their intial reception, retraining.and resettlement, the United Jewish
Appeal must have cash immediately. Most of this work in Israel is carried on by the United
Palestine Appeal, which is supported by the UJA. Detroiters help this cause' through their
contributions to the Allied Jewish Campaign.
A variety show, "The World
Is a Theater," will be presented
by the dramatic group of the
Rabbi Mandel M. Zazer Chap-
ter, Bnai Brith, June 2 at Bnai
