Council of Jewish Women will
hold its annual spring luncheon
TOLEDO—A former Detroit meeting at 12:30 p.m. Monday,

Mrs. Herman Sharfman (nee original skit will highlight the

songs. So far, she has com-
pleted 15 of them, and several
have been acclaimed.
Her most recent, "Dear Pales-
tine," started off as a poem:
Then she set it to music. It re-
ceived many plaudits after be-
ing introduced at a Senior Had-
assah meeting by Lena Kaplan,
well-known Toledo soprano.
A poet of no little ability, Mrs.
Sharfman is a regular contribu-
tor to the Toledo press.
Mrs. Sharfman's mother, Mrs.
Rachel Pearlman; brother, Louis;
and sisters, Mrs. Maurice I. Bale
and Mrs. David Yaker, all live
in Detroit.

Workmen's Circle
Concert May 16

Masha Benya, soprano, will
be the soloist at the 15th an
nual concert of the Workmen's
Circle Chorus, Sunday, May 16
at Scottish Rite Cathedral of
the Masonic Temple. Dan Froh-
man will direct.
Miss Benya, who has not been
heard in Detroit for the last
three years will present two
groups of songs in Yiddish, He-
brew and English. She will be
the soloist with the chorus of
110 voices in Schubert's Can-
tata, "Miriam's Song of Tri-
umph."
The chorus has just returned
from a concert in Cleveland
where it won much critical ac-
claim.

Beim Mendelson, 11-year-old
pianist, in a recital, Friday eve-
ning, April 30, at Baldwin Hall,
Woodward and Ferry avenues.

Maimonides Unit
Awaits luncheon

Rabbi Frain to Speak
at Meeting Saturday

Mrs. Irvin Weisenthal and
Mrs. S. S. Farbman have been
appointed chairmen of the fund-
raising luncheon of the Women's
Auxiliary, Maimonides Medical
Society, to be held May 25 at
Masonic Temple.
Highlight will be a fashion
show to be presented by models
of the John Roberts Agency.
The monthly meeting of the
group will take place at 1 p.m.,
Saturday, in the home of Mrs.
A. S. Rogoff, 17154 Muirtand
avenue, with Rabbi Leon Fram
as guest speaker. A dessert
luncheon will be served.
Mrs. Marvin B. Levy, presi-
dent, urges members to bring
clothing and medical supplies to
be sent to a sanitarium in Ger-
many. Mrs. David Kliger is pro-
gram chairman.

Mrs. Harold Ziv, property di-
rector. Mrs. Royal Maas will be
the pianist.
The cast includes Mesdames
Marjorie Hart, Nathan Schlafer,
Joseph Radom and Harold
Schakne.
Mrs. David Marx, Mrs. Louis
Landsberg and Mrs. Ralph Levy
are in charge of luncheon ar-
rangements. Reservations are
being taken by Mrs. A. C. Lap-

Physicians Group
Honors Dr. Edgar

Dr. Irving I. Edgar, promi-
nent Detroit psychiatrist, has
been named a Fellow of the
American College of Physicians.

His election was based mainly
on his work in the field of
neuropsychiatry.
A graduate of Wayne Uni-
versity, Dr. Edgar has been a
lecturer at the Wayne medical
school for many years. He re-
ceived his M.A. degree in Eng-
lish literature at that school
and is a recognized authority on
Shakespearean literature.

Dr. David Lifshitz, envoy from
the fighting front in Palestine,
will deliver the principal ad-
dress at the Dov Gruner mem-
orial program of the United
Zionists-Revisionists at 8:30 p.
m., Tuesday, in Bnai Moshe.
The meeting will commem-
orate the first Yahrzeit of the
martyred hero who died at the
hands of the British.
The Rev. David Katzman will
chant the Hazkarah for Gruner
and the other Jewish fighters
who gave their lives for their
Homeland. •

The engagement of Lucene
Saper to Harold Wasserman, son
if Mr. and Mrs. Irving Wasser-
man of Doris avenue, is an-
nounced by her mother, Mrs.
Rose Saper of Calvert avenue.
Miss Saper spent two years
at the University of Miami and
is now attending Wayne Univer-
sity.
Her fiance attended the Uni-
versity of Kansas and received
his degree at Wayne. He is a
student in the Wayne medical
school after spending two years
in service.

Completion of a quarter cen-
tury of service to the Jewish
community will be marked by
Young Israel at a dinner May
23 at Shaarey Zedek.
Part of a national movement
of 70 branches, the Detroit
group was organized in 1923 by
a handful of young men and
women.
One of the major features of
Young Israel work here is the
sponsorship of clubs for boys
and girls of junior and inter-
mediate age.
Trained leaders, supervised by
Young Israel, conduct a full pro-
gram of cultural and recreation-
al activities for youth groups
which meet at Yeshivah Beth
Yehudah and in private homes
throughout the Dexter-Linwood-
12th street neighborhoods.
One of the more important
phases of the Young Israel youth
program is the sponsorship this
year of a summer camp, Camp
Adas, at Union Pier, Mich. For

Acclaimed as one of the out-
standing young electrical engi-
neers in the country, Jerome
Wiesner of Dearborn was pre-
sented an honorable mention
certificate by the Etta Kappa
Nu Association at a meeting in
Pittsburgh of the American In-
stitute of Electrical Engineers.
To qualify for the award, the
candidate must be not older
than 35 years nor be out of
college for more than 10 years
by May 1 of the - year for which
he is cited.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Jo-
seph J. Wiesner, of 4710 Green-
field road, Weisner, who is an
associate professor at the Mass-
achusetts Institute of Technol-
ogy, received his B.S. and M.S.
degrees from the University of
Michigan in 1937 and 1938, re-
spectively.
He was given an army-navy
citation for designing and build-
ing a carrier-current radio
transmitter and associated studio
equipment used extensively dur-
ing the war.
At present he also is a mem-
ber of the staff of the Atomic
'Energy Commission.
