DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE

NEW YORK — The National
Jewish Welfare Board (JWB)
will continue on a permanent
peace-time basis its program of
religious, morale and welfare
services for Jewish men in the
armed forces and in Veterans
Administration II o s p i t a ls
throughout the United States as
well as at overseas points, in-
cluding clubs in Panama and
Hawaii, following termination of
the USO on Dec. 31.
Frank L. Weil, president of
JWB, which since 1917 has been
officially accredited by the gov-
ernment to serve Jews in the
armed forces, said that JWB's
1948 budget of $1,477.800, ear-
marks $437,575 for this work.

Although the USO program,
in which JWB participated from
the beginning of the national
emergency, ends at the close of
this year, Weil said the need
to serve Jews in the armed
forces and Veterans Adminis-
tration hospitals continues, and
from now on it will have to be
financed wholly by JWB."
JWB's peacetime army and
navy program, serving 200 in-
stallations and hospitals and to
be administered by a field staff
of 16, will have the aid of the
309 Jewish Community Centers
affiliated with JWB, who will
provide facilities and programs
and of 250 local army and navy
committees.

First Building
Erected by Billet
Finished in Canada

VANCOUVER, B. C. — The
first building to be constructed
by the Hillel Foundations has
been dedicated, according to Dr.
A. L. Sachar, chairman of the
National Hillel Foundation Com-
mission. It is located on the
campus of the University of
British Columbia here.
Dr. Sachar explained that
many Ifiilel buildings have
been bought and renovated or
extensively remodeled for Jew-
ish student purposes, but the one
at Vancouver is the first to be
actually constructed.
The university donated the
land, and the university archi-
tect planned the building, which
was constructed with funds
raised by a Bnai Brith commit-
tee headed by David Chertow,
Sachar said.
