In July, 1942, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. After completing re-

He served overseas at Pearl Harbor and Midway Island.
After his discharge, Korn had an urge to loaf around and have
a good time. That desire soon wore out and Korn set to work build-
ing his future. "To those veterans who are unable to settle down, I
say that plenty of hard work concentrated toward one goal is the
best cure for that tendency toward lethargy and escapism."

"IN THE PAST THESE groups have been pushed around and
made to feel they are not wanted anywhere. Denied meeting space
by three leading Jewish congregations, young men and women were
forced to assemble in their own homes or in restaurants.
"It's about time the Jewish community awakened to the needs of
the youth and provided this center. And it shouldn't be done by the
veteran groups themselves, as has been planned.
"We want this to be a living memorial of all Jews in Detroit."

PUTel'ING HIS OWN ,,ords into action, Korn became the first
commander of Post No. 1 of AMVETS (American Veterans of World
War 11). He also acted its state commander for six month and was
instrumental in helping The Michigan AMVETS blossom into an or-
ganization of almost 10,000 members.
He represented the AMVETS during the war assets investigation
and fought for priorities for veterans in purchasing government sur-
pluses. Korn also planned the picketing of the Veterans' Administra-
tion during the General Motors strike, petitioning the state to pay
unemployment benefits to , veterans who were unemployed because
of the strike.
What Korn considers most important for the Jewish youth of
Detroit is a social center in the northwest section, with club rooms,
ah auditorium, library and ballroom. "These desperately-needed facili-
ties would be a boor, to thriving youth groups," he said.

V' OUTH, EXPERIENCE and community service do not frequently

run hand In hand, but in Monte M. Korn, Detroit attorney, there
is proof that the three ingredients can be blended successfully.

Anxious to help expand Jewish youth organizations. Korn insists
that the local groups are a vital asset to the spiritual, social and
economic life of the community. And Korn doesn't just talk about
implementing his ideals.
Coupling a vivacious personality with an earnest desire to get
thipgs done, Korn has actively participated in a number of civic
ventures.
Recently he served a* chairman
of the planning board of the
Hamtramck Citizen's Committee
in which capacity he drafted the
"Fight Inflation" resolution adopt-
ed by the Hamtramck Common
Council. Striving to help reduce
the cost of living, Korn also
handled public relations for the
Wayne County Council CIO in its
fight to stabilize prices.
Born on July 4. 1919, Korn has
lead an active life. He was gradu-
ated from the Shaarey Zedek Sun-
day School, served as vice-presi-
dent of the Junior Congregation
of that Synagogue in 1936. He
organized and was the first presi-
dent of Social Inc.; the largest in-
dependent Jewish young people's
social group in Detroit.
