Thursday, May 16:
Waiting, hoping, hoping, watch-
ing. "Oi Gottenu shtroff uns nit."
Over and over
and over again,
the same pray-
er goes thru
your mind, the
same prayer is
m u rmured,
"G o ttenu
shtroff uns nit."
You sit by the
bedside, cogniz-
ant of every
move, every extra little breath,
every flutter of the eyelid. You
watch the nurse's face for any
tell-talc expression. "Uh, uh,
there's a change!" Her eye-balls
start rolling back and forth, like
the pendulum of a clock or the
beacon light on an air field tow-
er — You watch the gauge on the
oxygen tank—You think science is
wonderful—"A deink dir Gott far
das and far als." She's breathing
a little harder and faster, he:
eyes are still rolling back and
forth, back and forth. You think
of a man on see' - id base tryine-
to steal a run. Will he make it?
Will she make it ? "Nurse, think
we better call the doctor." It's
4:30 a. m. Then suNenly your
heart stops beating — she takes
one funny little gasp, the eyes
stop rolling—your mind keeps re-
peating faster and faster, "Got-
teenu shtroff uns nit." Thank
God, she's back to slow, even
breathing—feet, hands still warm.
You help the nurse change the
bed-clothes. She tells you "the in-
travenus is doing her good. Her
body is functioning—it keeps her
from dehydrating." A silly
thought goes thru your mind.
"Cancer shmenser, abee gezundt."
Everything is back to the same
watchful sitting. You discuss the
malady with the nurse—"sugar is.
an awful thing --- funny science
hasn't found a cure for it, science
has proven so wonderful in so
many things." The dawn's break-
ing, your heart along with it.
Poor mamale! You wonder could
you have done anything to have
made life easier for her? While
there's life, there's hope. Please,
dear God! You're going to go out
in the hall for a smoke, you cau-
tion the nurse not to leave the
bedside; to call you if "Mom
moves." The cigarette tastes lou-
sy . . . you read, you write—you
pray. "Gottenu shtroff uns nit."
