So They Tell Me--
By LOUIS W. ENFIELD

it's the same old story . . No re-
sponse! No response! Our scien-
tific sense says "it can't be long"
mar blind faith goes on pray-
and hoping for a miracle.

one knows what to expect here

A perfect hour? Life to the ut-

happiness, a world of misery,

tomorrow will bring." That's
right, sister. God knows what to-
morrow will bring. But what can
I write about but life and death.
And how little I know of either
. . how little I am equipped with
adequate enough ways to thank
God for those blessings of life .
how futile for me to talk of aught
else. I only know one thing, "You
can't take it with you." How mar-
velous it must be to know when
"your time comes" that you've
done till you could along the way
to reach out a helping hand to
those who needed it . . to light•

you've "done unto others as

to the best of your ability . . It's
a grand feeling - - a clear con-

Oh God, here I am writing and
my body's swaying to the rhythm

Cinema Presents Detroit Premiere
In Notable Polish Documentary
History is full of stories of
narrow escapes front death on the
part of great men whose early
demise would have changed the
course of world events. Suppose
Hitler had died as a child. 0..
Napoleon. Or George Washington.
And yet there must have been
many who did.
At Constantin Soropolls' birth,
the fates ruled that his life was
to change the entire history of
the world. Anyone who could read
the stars could have forecast th‘
whole thing according to predes-
tined decree. And it made inter-
esting reading.
Soropolis lived at the close of
the second century. At the age of
twenty-seven, lie made the great-
est discovery known to mankind
He perfected the philosopher's
stone.
The philosopher's stone had two
great qualities. It could change
with its touch any of the baser
metals to gold. It could restore
to youth any old man or woman.
Soropolis went to Cathay where,
with his unusual powers, he be-
came emperor. He was not the
sort to keep his treasure to him-
self but shared it with all.
Not only did he make his coun-
try rich and all the people in his
land, but he set out on the ambi-
tious project of curing the entire
world of selfishness by giving to
every man what he wanted. He I
laid down a code of ethics and
promised eternal life and untold
wealth to all who would live by
these rules. Peoples from all over
the world urged him to come to
their lands, to give them wealth
and life and to teach them how
to live unselfishly.
It was fated that this be done
and Soropolis had been designat-
ed as the instrument of fate to
see that the course of history
went according to schedule. This
wa. , his destiny, decreed in the
stars at his birth.
The best of decrees sometimes
go haywire. As a baby, Soropolis

had been warned to stay away
from the well. But when he was
only three years old. he stepped
too close to the edge and fell down
the well and drowned.

One of the most notable films yet to come out of the war, the
feature length documentary, "Beyond Endurance," telling the whole
story of Poland's heroic resistance against the Nazi invader and
her struggle by the side of the Allies to regain her freedom, had
its Detroit premiere at the Cinema Theatre starting Wednesday,
May 22. Narration by Joseph Wittlin, distinguished author of "Salt
of the Earth," is in English and the musical background of the
film hits been adopted from the music of the great Polish patriot
and composer, Frederic Chopin.
The story contains authentic shots from the ruins of the War-
ghetto and the concentration camps of Lublin, Glawice and Poz-
nan. It shows the Jewish military formation of the Second Corps it
Italy taking part In the conquering of Monte Casino and the open-
ing of the first synagogue in Rome with the first services comme-
