and justice of the world and the other to open the eyes of the people
to the cruelties of the inquisition, to the tyranny of the invaders.
The little, insignificant peasant boy, Tyl Ulenspiegl, whose only weapon
was ridicule, won indirectly, when the people of Flanders cast out the
invaders of their country.
Charles de Coster shows his intense hatred of Rome and of
Madrid, for he knew what this combination did to his country in the
16th century and in the time he lived. He could have felt the same
way just a few years ago limid his attitude and his hatred could have
been justified during the reign of Mussolini and Franco.
Coster died in 1879, but had he lived in 1940-42 he could have
sent out it modern Tyl to roam all over Europe invaded by the same
forces of evil as in the 16th century, and seeing the same sources
supporting the forces of evil, for Hitler could have been called the •
Philip the Second of the 20th Century. There were the noble exiles
and rebels like Egmont and the collaborators with all the parapher- •
nalia of the Inquisition.
While Tyl is all earth, practical, sometimes cynical, the author
takes him with the help of Katheline, mother of Tyl's sweatheart
Nele, the mad woman, who is the link between the real and the unreal,
and who was at that time designated as a witch into the world of
spirits. There he sees the Almighty sentence Philip to hell. The
unreal which is brought in by the author represents the symbolism by
which he indicates the salvation of Flanders.
While Tyl is only a legend, to the readers he is a guide to the
historical events which actually took place at his time, and while he
is. only a prankster, he becomes a hero and a defender of liberty am:
a symbol of life which is a mixture of comedy and tragedy. The
roots of this legend lie in the dim past in which the craving for
liberty smouldered and was expressed through stories indicating the
hope and desire for criticism and revenge against injustice and op-
