JEWISH CONTRIBUTIONS TO MEDICINE
By EDWARD PODOLSKY, M.D.
Jews began to distinguish them-
selves in medicine with unusual
prominence during the Middle
Ages and shortly thereafter.
Among the earliest of the great
Jewish physicians was Isaac
Israeli, who attained an enviable
reputation as an eye specialist in
his day. His eminence in this
science was so great that he was
made the private physician of
Fatimate, Calif of Kairwan. Be-
side his interest in diseases of the
eye, Dr. Israeli did some original
work on the origin of fevers.
The most noteworthy Jewish
physician of the Middle Ages was
Moses Maimonides, whose name
is immortalized in Hebrew litera-
ture, was the author of the Guide
to The Perplexed. He was also
well known as a philosopher, poet,
author and religious leader. As
a physician Maimonides had many
modern ideas on diet. He wrote
on a great many medical prob-
lems and his was one of the
keenest medical minds of the
times.
PHYSICIAN TO POPE
Bonet de Latis was another
great name in early Jewish medi-
cine. When the Jews were ex-
pelled from Provence in the last
part of the 15th century, he was
called to Rome as the personal
physician of Pope Leo X. His
skill as a physician must have
been extraordinary, for at a time
when the Jews were subjected to
the cruelest persecution for a Jew
to become the personal physician
of the Pope was a very notable
achievement. He took advantage
of his position to plead for his
co-religionists when they were
being subjected to the inhuman
Pferrkorn persecutions.
Another Jew yho became per
sonal physician to a Pope was
Jacob Mantine who was in at-
tendance to Paul III. He was so
versatile a man that he at-
tained distinction as a diplomat
as well, It was he who acted as
ambassador on behalf of Charles
V at Venice.
During the 15th century and
thereafter Jewish medical men of
prominence became very numer-
ous. They were found as private
physicians to almost every king
in Europe, and because of these
positions were able to speak a
good word for their people when
the occasion demanded. Marie (le
Medici was attended by Elias Mon-
talte and she thought so much of
him that she had his body em-
balmed at his death as he desired
and sent to Holland for burial.
Some of these monarchs were
strangely inconsistent as those
who are insanely prejudiced are
likely to be. Thus Francois I, who
barred Jewish physicians from
practising in France, was not
averse to calling a Jewish doctor
when he himself was seriously ill.
The first Jewish physician to
be permitted to fill the position
of privatdocent in Prussia was
Robert Remak. There is nothing
surprising in this, for Remak was
already a physician of inter-
national reputation at that time,
having won great honors in
neurology and electrology. He also
made great contributions to em-
bryology, the science of life in
the making.
FATHER OF PATHOLOGY
Another great German-Jewish
physician was Ludwig Traube,
who has earned the name of Fa-
ther of Experimental Pathology.
He made great contributions to
the studies of clinical thermometry
and to the treatment of heart
disease with digitalis. Karl Wei-
gart was another Jew who at-
tained great prominence in medi-
cine. He was also a pathologist
and a member of the Leopsic
University faculty. Today his
name is immortalized in the fa-
mous Weigart stains which have
made 'Imssible many— discoveries-

"As the Jewish New Year approaches, people everywhere
can thank God that the (lays and nights of terror have passed.
Millions of Jews who committed no crimes have been mur-
dered.
"Those who were responsible must be punished. Those who
survived the Nazi persecution will, I am sure, help make this
the sort of world where evil will never triumph again."

man physician was Julius Bern-
' stein, famous as a physiologist
and anatomist, whose contribu-
tions to the physiology of the
nervous system are of great im-
portance. He was also a noted
teacher at the University of
Halle.
Two brothers, Richard Liebreich
in ophthalmology and Oskar E.
Liebreich in pharmacology were
world famous medical men. Rich-
ard, long associated with St.
Thomas's Hospital in London,
made a special study of the in-
fluence of school life on vision
and invented two eye instru-
ments which are still in use today.
He also improved some of the in-
ventions of Helmholtz. Oscar
Liebreich discovered the narcotic
effect of chloral hydrate and dem-
onstrated the narcotic effects of
ethylene chloride and butyl chlor-
ide, drugs of great importance
in medicine today. He also intro-
duced platinordidium cabbulas
for the hypodermic syringe and
popularized the use of mercury in
the treatment of syphilis. The
healing properties of lanolin,
which is in universal use today,
was discovered by him in 1885.
Other drugs of great value which
he discovered are tolipyrin, cre-
osol, formalin and methylene blue.
