Rosh Hashonah,
Day of Conscience

ROSH HASHANA GREETINGS FROM ABROAD

(Continued from Page 1)
given the peace of extermination
—the majority have that pow-
er—but on the day that happens,
the world at large will also die
—die in soul, precursor to physi-
cal death. But mankind is not
heading that way. Its face is
turned toward the light.
The Jew will have to have his
place in a world where he can
meet non-Jews on a plane of
mutual respect, where he can har-
bor his wounded, revive his cul-
ture, where he can reach down
again into his inner resources
and make additional contribu-
tions to the welfare of all men,
where he can in short be his own
master in his own land. The
Jewish Commonwealth in Pales-
tine is the major answer to the
Jewish question. Without it the
world will never be at peace, for
a fundamental wrong will not
have been erased.
When will the conscience of
Western Civilization realize this,
act upon it, and thus confer
upon the Jew what every people
is entitled to, the boon of nor-
mality—and upon itself the re-
ward of having done the right-
eous thing? Western Civilization,
founded on religious premises
and sanctions, professes to have
reached superior heights in man-
kind's progress. Can it maintain
that position in the light of its
record for the past one hundred
years?
Rosh-haShonah — Day of Con-
science—has always been a chal-
lenge to the Jew. It is so today.
But today, more than ever be-
fore, it is a challange to the rest
of mankind.

Cpl. Rose Zaremski, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Zaremski,
6809 North Clark Street, Chicago,
is chief clerk, Theater Exchange
Office, African Middle East Head-
quarters. She joined the WAC
in January 1943, arrived in Cairo
in June 1944. To all people of
her faith Cpl. Zaremski sends this
New Year's greeting:

"As the New Year rolls arounl
once more, this one so much
closer to the ultimate peace we
search for, it is my privilege to
send greetings to my family,
friends, and the thousands of
Jewish people in the United
States. And with this greeting
goes the wish that next Rosh
Hashana will find the entire world
united in one purpose—to pre-
serve and keep the peace our men
and women fought for."

den of an American Red Cross

ing his 30 months overseas, Kol-
end has also served as a Red Cross
field director at several army
posts. To those of his faith
"Nate" sends these New Year's
greetings:
"On the occasion of the New
Year, it is my pleasure as a mem-
ber of the American Red Cross to
extend my heartfelt best wishes.
American Jewry has reason to feel
proud of its contribution to the war
effort and to bringing nearer our
long-sought victorious peace.
"Many of our faith are honored
to serve with the American Red
Cross—to serve your sons and
daughters in uniform at home and
abroad. We in the African Mid-
dle East Theater join with you in
prayer on this Holy Day. May
your every prayer be answered,
and may all of us soon join you
in a world at peace."

the above address, and his par-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Morris Kolend,

President Truman's Rosh Hashonah message is as follows:

"I extend to all my fellow Americans of Jewish faith my

hearty congratulations and best wishes for New Year's Day.

"The enemies of civilization who would have destroye,1

completely all freedom of religion have been defeated. All

faiths unite in thanksgiving to Almighty God on our victory

over the forces of evil.
"Let us now all join in to create the kind of peace set-

tlement which will keep alive freedom of religious beliefs all

over the world, and prevent the recurrence of all this misery

and destruction. That is the most fitting memorial we can

erect to those who have fought and suffered and labored and

died in this struggle to preserve decency for mankind."

HARRY S. TRUMAN.
