DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle
Florence and afterwards a simi-
lar position at the University of
Geneva. He ranked particularly
high as an authority on the archi-
tectonics of the nerves.
In Hungary, Moritz Benedikt
attained great fame as a neurol-
ogist, later becoming professor of
neurology at the University of Vi-
enna. He was famed throughout
the world as an electrologist, and
his work in criminology was wide-
ly known. His studies on the
brains of criminals were trans-
lated into many languages and
were the authority in this field.
The greatest criminologist dur-
ing the last century was the Ital-
ian Jew, Cesare Lombroso, whose
single volume, "Man of Genius,"
was the greatest work of its kind
ever written and even today is
regarded as a classic. He was the
founder of the school of crimin-
ology which has for its principal
contention that criminals have
certain well-defined physical stig-
mata which are always easy to
discern and measure.
Lombroso began his career as
professor at the University of Pa-
via where he served without pay;
he finally, however, did attain the
munificent salary of $500 a year.
Is it any wonder that he was con-
tinually in want? But this did not
dim his zest for work. He was at
all times ready to respond to calls
of distress and was for many
years physician without pay to
an insane asylum not far from
where he lived. In his "Man of
Genius" he attempted to show
that many men of genius had a
strong strain of insanity, and
that the partition which separat-
ed genius from insanity was a
very thin one indeed.
Lombroso deduced two theories
with which his name is associated:
First, genius is a "peculiar psy-
chical form of larvate epilepsy,"
and second, that "there is a de-
generate class of human beings
distinguished by anatomical and
psychical characteristics, who are
born with criminal instincts and
who represent a reversion to a
very primitive form of human-
ity."
GREATEST DISCOVERY
His greatest medical discovery
was made while he was at Pavia,
where he undertook a study of
pellagra, a disease which had long
afflicted the people of northern
Italy. He believed that he had
discovered its source in the moul-
dy corn which these people were
in the habit of eating. This in
time gained world-wide accep-
tance. However, this was not the
whole story in the case of pel-
lagra. It remained for another
Jewish physician, Joseph Gold-
berger, to discover more about
the mysteries of pellagra and to

help banish it entirely as a dis-
ease of mystery. Both of these
men were unappreciated. It is in-
teresting to note that the great-
est contributions to our knowl-
edge of pellagra were made by
two Jewish physicians.
In psychiatry the Jew has at-
tained great prominence. This is
not so very strange, for, unfor-
tunately, there is a preponderance
of Jewish mental cases in many
insane asylums. Max Leidesdorf.
of Austria, was a leading alienist
of his time. He was one of the
group who examined the mental
condition of the dethroned Mu-
rad, and later that of Louis II of
Bavaria. In more recent times,
one of the world's greatest stu-
dents of the human mind was
Sigmund Freud whose develop-
ment of the science of psycho-
analysis had done much to clar-
ify many conceptions in psychia-
try.
To continue with the list of
notable names: there was Gabriel
G. Valentin. Long a pathologist,
he left notable works on the cir-
culation of the blood, on toxi-
cology, on digestion and on the
electrical responses of muscles
and nerves. Gluge, who in later
life, settled in Belgium, was one
of the first physicians to examine
the diseased tissues of the body
under the microscope. While do-
ing special microscopic research
he discovered a curious parasite
in fish which is today known as
Glugea microcopra.
Today one of the most univer-
sally employed methods in patho-
logical procedure is frozen sec-
tion, a technic which is particu-
larly valuable in the diagnosis of
cancer. The first to use this meth-
od was Julius Cohnheim, profes-
sor of pathology at the University
of Leipzig. He was also able to
demonstrate "nerve degeneration,"
in Cohnheim's Areas, a histologi-
cal feature with which every first
year medical student soon be-
comes familiar. This great path-
ologist began his career with the
founder of cellular pathology, Ru-
dolph Virchow. He was a pioneer
in applying the "theory of in-
flammation" which is now gener-
ally accepted, but which new de-
parture was the result of his
researches in the field of patho-
logical circulation and the causes
of blood clots.
PIONEER U.S. DOCTOR
In the United States one of the
first practicing physicians was Ja-
cob Lumbrosi, who put out his
shingle in Maryland in 1639. Ile
is said to have been the only Jew
in that little Maryland group. It
was he who furnished the nucleus
of all knowledge that existed con-
cerning the early Jewish settlers
in that state. Practically every
Jewish community after his time
had its own physician.
During the previous century
many physicians Of the Jewish
faith rose to great fame. Among
the most noted was Abraham
Jacobi who did much to put pedi-
atrics on a scientific basis. An-
other was Dr. Koller who did
much for advancing the study
and treatment of diseases of the
eye. In 1884 lie introduced co-
caine as a local anesthetic in eye
operations, which is considered a
contribution of major importance
in eye surgery.
With the discovery of the bac-
terial causes of diseases, a num-
ber of distinguished Jewish bac-
teriologists came to the fore.
There was Frankel who discover-
ed the germ of pneumonia, and
Neisser, who discovered the germ
of gonorrhea, one of the greatest
achievements in modern medicine.
Anton Weickelbaum discovered
the bacillus which many believe
is the cause of influenza. The
process of phagocytosis was dis-
covered by Eli Metchnikoff, while
the first physician to make use of
agglutination for the diagnosis of
typhoid was Widal whose name is
immortalized in the test of that
name. Haffkine of Calcutta was
the first to prepare an effective
treatment for the dreaded bu-
bonic plague.
The great modern pioneers in-
clude a great many Jews. Jacob

"The recent finish of the war makes this celebration o
the Jewish New Year an occasion of the most solemn signi-
ficance. In sending cordial greetings to all our citizens of Jew-
ish faith, I rejoice with you that deliverance has come for ti) -e
who have suffered so greatly under the barbarism of Nazi and
Fascist rule.
But deliverance has not yet brought peace and a home
many of them. Together we must work to build a just and
enduring peace for all peoples so that all men and wo m e n ,
regardless of race, religion or language, will be protected (row
persecution or discrimination and in their equal right to enjoy
all other fundamental human rights and freedoms."
