of the world may be even more
crucial than its part in the win-
ning of the war.
"A global peace must be a
peace in which the small nations
as well as the great ones shall
have the chance at life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness. A
global peace must be a peace in
which the scourge of unemploy-
ment shall be lifted, through in-
ternational cooperation. These
ends can be attained if a frac-
tion of what is now being spent
for works of destruction would
be spent for works of construe-
tion. A global peace must be a
peace in which races and creeds
will dwell side by side with none
to make them afraid of one an-
other.
"Such a global peace is more
possible now than ever it was
in the history of man, thanks to
the achievements of science. You
men in the air force are in a
special position to appreciate how
much the airplane and the radio
have made the whole globe a
relatively manageable neighbor-
hood. Science has made the vi-
sion of religion realizable at
last. What is the vision of reli-
gion? You will find it in your
Bibles, in the utterances of the
Prophets of the Jewish-Christiar

tradition 2,000 and 2,500 years
ago. It is the vision of interna-
tional peace based upon interna-
tional justice. Those prophets
were not idle dreamers but prac-
tical statesmen ahead of their
time. We are just beginning to
catch up with them.
"Science is the tool which en-
ables mankind to realize the vi-
sion of religion. It is a tool which
can be used to bless or to curse.
The same airplane which brings
destruction, tragedy and ruin can
also be the messenger of content-
ment, brotherhood and peace.
Everything depends on the human
heart and the human will. Nature
is generous, man is skillful, we
have enough natural resource,
enough manufacturing and trans-
portation facilities, to banish hun-
ger and misery from the earth, if
only we might have enough of
the global view, the universal
pulse, and the righteous will.
This is what religion would in-
culcate, the religion of the Catho-
lic, Protestant and Jew, not only
as expounded in their sacred texts
of yore but also in their social-
economic platforms of today,
It is no accident, therefore.
that Judaism and Christianity are
on Hitler's blacklist. He fears re-
ligion because it is the fountain-
head of internationalism, there-
fore he persecutes it. The Nazi
cult says that the Germans are
the master race to conquer and
enslave the others. Religion says,
'All men are equal in the sight
of God.' The Nazi says, 'The in-
dividual is nothing, the State is
everything.' Religion says, 'Every
soul has worth and every con-
science is inviolable.' The Nazi
says, 'There are no standards of
right and wrong; the only stand-
ard is, what makes the German
nation mighty.' Religion says, 'Not
by force or by might but by My
spirit.' You see, then, there is
no room in the world for both
Hitlerism and religion. One of
them must go. As sure as-there is
a God, it is Hitlerism which will
perish from the earth.
"Next time that you boys meet
your chaplain and see the Cross
or Ten Commandments on his
uniform, remember that he is
the witness of what religion
stands for, that religion stands
for the salvation of the human
race, not only hereafter but.
here, that religion has a stake in
this war, and that if the peace
will be a decent peace it will be
patterned on the lines of reli-
gion's vision.
And now it remains to hope
that the condition precedent to
the accomplishment of these aims,
namely, the complete defeat of
the Axis, will soon be achieved.
I know it can't be soon enough
for you. When that job is fin-
ished you boys will go back to
your home communities to re-
sume your work and your careers.
If your folks back home have
any sense, they will see to it in
the meantime that there should

they will learn from the mistakes

two fronts, the home front and
