Rosh Hashonah and a Life-Saving Program
B y SAMUEL SCHAEFER
Executive Secretary, National Jewish Hospital at Denver
The new Jewish year of 5701
demands of all of us a reorienta-
tion of our entire thinking. The
day-by-day struggle for a liveli-
hood sinks into insignificance
when we consider and analyze
the suffering of our people
throughout the world. We may
shed bitter tears at the thought
of Hitler's annihilation of more

than two millions of our breth-
ren; we may be despondent at
the thought of the destruction of
millions of other innocent peo-
ple throughout the world. Yet all
these sacrifices will have been in
vain unless there is a spiritual
reawakening of Israel and the
entire world so that we may win
the peace as well as the war.
This is the spiritual signifi-
cance of Rosh Hashonah and of
Yom Kippur in this, mankind's
most critical era. These Holy
Days, and the period intervening
between them, are a time in Ju-
daism when we renew our adher-
ence to the cardinal principles
of our faith which proclaims that
life and the right to happiness
are man's most precious posses-
sion and that the destruction of
life is eouivalent to the violation
of the Majesty of God.
The National Jewish Hospital
at Denver is founded on Jewish
ethics, the application of which

ethics is as universal as is hu-
manity itself and emphasizes the
importance of the unity and
equality of mankind.
During this New Year of 5704,
the National Jewish Hospital ap-
proaches its 45th anniversary of
service to all Americans. Just as
charity is one of the cardinal
principles of Jewish life and
philosophy, so is the hospital's
work an exemplification of this
ideal.

the Balfour Declaration. Edwin
Montagu, one of Lily's brothers,
had been influential in opposing
the plan of creating a Jewish na-
tional homeland in Palestine dur-
ing the early negotiations be-
tween the Zionist organization
and the British Government.
It was not easy for Lily Mon-
tagu to break away and chart
her own course—particularly in
the face of her own family's op-
position. She tells how she first
went her way at the age of 18,
but ludicrously still tied to her
governess' apron strings. Wealthy
women in England, even up to the
time of the present war, were
expected to lead rather inactive
lives, though with occasional ef-
forts at some form of social serv-
ice. One of Lily's older sisters
led a small group of Jewish girls,
with whom she met once a week
for discussion. Lily soon realized
how deep was the need that this
group represented—a need which
her sister only vaguely sensed;
and, as Lily accompanied her
sister to these meetings in a
poorer section of London, she
persuaded her sister to let her
take over the group. And so on
Saturday afternoons, when the
girls returned from work, Lily
began to take charge. In review-
ing these early meetings, Miss
Montagu recalls how comical she
must have appeared; an aristo-
cratic young lady, educated at
one of the best schools but ac-
companied always by her govern-
ess, trying to give practical help
in matters of career, marriage,
