By RABBI A. M. HERSHMAN
Of Shaarey Zedah Synarogue

Foremost among the blessings fervently to be prayed
for at this season of the year is a revitalized and quick-
ened Jewish consciousness. Staggering are the problems
which face us, the duties which rest upon us. The one
prerequisite for a serious attempt to cope with those prob-
lems and duties is a new consecration, an intensified de-
votion to the cause for which Israel has lived, suffered
and died. "Return, 0 Israel, unto the Lord thy God" is the
call which the approaching "awe-inspiring" days ring
out. Our one imperious need today is to return to Judaism
—the arsenal of the Jewish spirit. "En oz elo Torah,"
genuine strength springs from the Torah, is the saying
of the Rabbis. It will lend wings to our soul, and clothe
us with invincibility. It will give us courage and strength
to face the swaying fortunes which the coming days have
in store for us with equanimity, serenity, courage and
confidence. It will gird us with strength to labor with
main and might for the realization of the great hope
when "iniquity shall close its mouth, wickedness vanish
like smoke, and the dominion of tyranny be removed from
the earth."
