tutions in America, 38 Park Row,
N. Y., has been successful in the
achievement of its two major
aims: To acquaint American
ewry with the importance and
work of these institutions and to
coordinate and increase the aid
raised here for them.
Particular attention was paid
by the Federated Counc . 1 to the
various Welfare Funds and Fed-
erations, whom it supplied with
ample information about the work
of the 133 institutions, which are
not only a spiritual bastion of the
Yishuv, but also a very vital eco-
nomic factor. These institutions
with tens of thousands dependent
upon them, it was pointed out,
are now passing through a very
serious crisis as a result of the
war which closed all of their
former sources of income, except
the United States.
This effort on the part of the
Federated Council has been high-
ly appreciated by the leaders of
the various Welfare Funds, who
were long craving for such a
responsible body as the Feder-
ated Council with whom they
could take up the case of all
these institutions that need aid
and allocate for them one lump

At Congregation Shaarey Ze-
dek services on Saturday morning,
special prayers are said for the
health of the president and for
a speedy victory in the war
against the Axis.

Jewish Prisoners of War in Ger
many Appeal for Aid

GENEVA (JPS)—Describing
their difficult plight as prisoners
asking for
of war in Germany,
warm clothes, food and tobacco
and stressing the urgency of
their appeal, a group of Jewish
war prisoners from Poland, now
in Germany, have sent a stirring
appeal to a Swiss Jewish relief
agency. For obvious reasons nei-
ther the names of the prisoners
nor that of the relief institut'on
can be made public, but be-
cause of its u..gency the letter
was made available to the out-
side world.

Menuhin Soloist

Thursday, Jan. 8

Yehudi Menuhin, world-famous
violinist, will be presented as
soloist with the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra at the concert of
Thursday night, Jan. 8, in Ma-
sonic Auditorium, it has been
announced by Symphony Mana-
ger Murray G. Paterson.
Originally, Sir Thomis Beecham
who will conduct the orchestra's
concerts of Jan. 1 and 2, was
to have been presented also at
the Jan. 8 concert. Because of
the urgent plea of the Metrolopi-
tan Opera Association that Sir
Thomas be available for them the
week of Jan. 5, the Detroit Sym-
phony Society has released the
noted English musician from the
Jan. 8 date. No soloist has been
scheduled for this program.
Sir Thomas will lead the con-
certs of Jan. 1 and 2, with Betty
Humby, English pianist, making
her local debut as soloist. Satur-
day night, Jan. 3, Georges Mi-
uelle, 'cellist, will make his an-
nual appearance as soloist. Then
follows the Menuhin appearance
on Jan. 8.
