If it were only for his famous
article on Henri Bergson, the
great French-Jewish philosopher,
the book would be worth its
price of $3. Remember that
story? It was a description, in
typical Hechtian style, of the
great Frenchman refusing to ac-
cept dispensation from the anti-
Semitic laws promulgated in
France upon the advent of
Nazism. At 80, Bergson left his
death-bed to stand in line and
to register with all other Jews.
This brief article is one of
the classics of our time. It is a
rebuke to Joe Kennedy who had
advised movie moguls to lay low
and not to cry out against indig-
nities.

But there are at least 50 more
articles just as effective, just as
powerful, just as stimulating.
These combine to make "1001

truly great book.

There are so many marvelous
pieces in this great volume—and
they are essays covering the
democratic front, the Jewish an-
gles--including some we took
serious exception to—and prac-
tically every coloration which
distinguishes New York from the
rest of the world.
"The Fable of Hymie Wein-
berg" was one of the sensations
of Ben Hecht's series when he
wrote them for PM.
And among the real good ones
is "How Do You Do?", the fam-
ous tribute to Sholem Aleichem.
Then there is a fine piece on
his friendly-enemy, Maxwell Bo-
denheim, under the title "A Poet
of Yesterday".
"Four Rabbis Speak" is the
statement that Jews will be
taught not only how to pray, but
also how to fight for their rights.

The Harpo Marx Tale

Within memory also is the
story about Harpo Marx, how he
fooled an anti-Semitic footman
in front of a famous jewelry
store, and how the latter lost his
