Lars Moen, an American chem-
iet, formerly a newspaperman,
caught in Belgium during the
German invasion, has described
his experiences in a book which
he appropriately titled "Under
the Iron Heel" (J. B. Lippincott
Co., Philadelphia). It is a very
objective book—perhaps too ob-
jective—and it does not express
the sense of outrage which simi-
lar books have indicated.
But this volume has significance
for two reasons. In the first
place, it records a number of hu-
morous experiences, and tells
stories which are current today
in Europe at the expense of the
Nazis. These stories enliven the
book and throw light on the at-
titude of the peoples of the con-
quered countries against the Ger-
SLOVAK LEAGUE Student Council
IS CALLED NAZI Of U. of M. Hillel
Elects Officers
Registration as Foreign
Agent Asked by the
Anti-Nazi League
The registration of the Slovak
League as an agent of a foreign
government, as required by the
McCormack Act, was urged upon
the State Department by the
Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League,
which pointed out that the Slo-
vak League has been advocat-
ing the recognition of Slovakia
by the United States. The Nazi-
dominated puppet-state of Slo-
vakia joined the Tripartite
Agreement wrich was extended
to include Hungary, Rumania
and Slovakia.
In a wire to Adolf A. Berle,
Jr., Assistant Secretary of State,
the Anti-Nazi League pointed to
a recent denunciation of the
Slovak League as a pro-Nazi
group and to the stand taken
by the anti-Nazi ogranization,
the Slovak National Alliance, in
also denouncing the Slovak Lea-
gue.
The Anti-Nazi League assert-
ed that the president of the
Slovak League, Josef Hucek, and
former president, Dr. Peter
Hletko, were leaders of a dele-
gation to Slovakia in 1938, which
on platforms decorated with
American flags, exhorted Slovak-
ians to demand their "independ-
ence" from Czechoslovakia, in
return for puppet-statehood
granted by Nazi Germany.
According to Andrew Valusek,
a member of the Board of Di-
rectors of the Non-Sectarian
Anti-Nazi League and district
President of the Slovak Nation-
al Alliance, the Slovak League,
through its officials, wired its
support to the leaders of the
Slovakian government at the
time of its anniversary celebra-
tion several months ago.
Since then, Mr. Valusek, who
is publisher of the New Yorksky
Dennik, asserts, the Slovak Lea-
gue has been actively propagan-
dizing for recognition of the Slo-
vakian puppet-state by the Unit-
ed States.

man invaders.
More important, however, is the
warning of the author that while
the Belgians would welcome food
from America, there is hardly a
Belgian he has talked with who
believed seriously "that the occu-
pied areas could be fed without a
great deal, perhaps the lion's
share, going to the new masters."
Mr. Moen shows that there is
no way of checking up on the
distribution of food. Furthermore,
he shows that a large share of
the food sent during 1914-18 was
diverted to the German army.
Thus, "Under the Iron Heel"
is a blunt warning against the
Hoover plan for the feeding of
the Belgians, and offers strong
support to the British resistance
to such a plan.
Wealthy French Anti-Semite De-
tained at Ellis Island
NEW YORK. — (WNS) —
Pierre Massin, wealthy French
anti-Semite and proFascist, was
detained at Ellis Island here, fol-
lowing his arrival from Lisbon
on the American Export liner
Exalibur. It was understood that
he was held on a technical charge
involving financial support.
The case of Mr. Massin was
brought to the attention of the
Immigration Department by the
New York newspaper PM which
harped that wealthy persons of
pro-Fascist sympathies obtained
United States visas without dif-
ficulty, while anti-Fascists were
kept out by the State Depart-
ment on the alert for fifth col-
umnists.
The pasty charosses, which is
included in the Passover menu
as a reminder of the mortar used
by the Israelites for making
bricks in Egypt, once had a more
practical meaning. Taking the
injunction to eat bitter herbs
at the Seder table literally,
many Jews would seriously burn
their tongues on the sharp con-
diments. To allay the burn, a
preparation of apple, nuts, wine
and cinnamon — our own cha-
rosses — was suggested.
The Student Council of tne
Bhai Brith Hillel Foundation at
the University of Michigan this
week elected Aaron Moyer of
Lorain, 0., to the presidency.
Robert Warner of Newark, N. J.,
was selected as vice president,
and Miss Janet Crone of Pontiac
is the new secretary.
Additional Council Members
elected by the system of pro-
portional representation include
Lois Arnold (Syracuse, N. Y.),
Uric Bronfenbrenner (Flushing,
N. Y.), Dorothy Davidson (De-
troit), Gloria Donen (Rye, N.
Y), Martin Dworkis (Brooklyn,
N. Y.), Naomi Ellias (Wyan-
dotte), Sylvia Forman (Albion,
N. Y.), Jack Lewin-Epstein (De-
troit), Herbert London (Cleve-
land), Robert Morrison (Wau-
kegan, Ill.), Samuel Rosen (Chi-
cago), Robert Unger (Cleve-
land), Hadassah Yanich (De-
troit).
David Crohn of Detroit, newly
elected president of the Avukah
Chapter of the University of
Michigan, also is a member of
the Hillel Student Council. Other
new officers of the Avukah
Chapter are Jerry Davidson, vice-
president (Detroit), Naomi El-
lias, secretary (Wyandotte), and
Helen Bittker, treasurer (Ro-
chester, N. Y.). The new offi-
cers will be formally installed
at a banquet to be held at the
close of the school year at the
Michigan Union.
Outgoing officers of the Hillel
Student Council are Jerome
Mecklenburger, president (Win-
netka, Ill.), Theodore Leibow-
itz, vice-president (Detroit), and
Jean Tenofsky, secretary (Go-
shen, Ind.).
GUIDE FOR WOMEN
Jewish women desiring to
know how to direct their chil-
dren's activities, what paths to
pursue in introducing observance
of Jewish festivals in the home,
and to learn the Judaic laws in-
tended for women, are provided
with an excellent guide book by
the Jewish Book Club, 110 W.
40th St., New York.
Prepared by Miriam Isaacs in
collaboration with Dr. Trude
Weiss Rosmarin, under the title
"What Every Jewish Woman
Should Know," this guide-book,
one of a series of 50-cent volumes
published by the Jewish Book
Club, is valuable for its concise-
ness, for the mass of information
it offers and for its popular style.
Jewish women are advised in
this volume on all matters per.
taining to the home, on the bring-
ing up of the children, on the
holidays, the Sabbath, the kosher
kitchen, and on the particular
Jewish laws for the purity of
womanhood.
Every holiday is included in
the volume. There is a section
containing holiday and tradition-
al recipes.
This volume promises to be-
come a "must" book for every
Jewish woman, and especially for
the young generation of Ameri-
can-Jewish women.
Brooklyn's Judge Samuel S.
Leibowitz, who until his election
to the bench last fall was Amer-
ica's foremost criminal lawyer
and was responsible for a record
number of acquittals, is establish-
ing some sort of record with the
number of aggregate years in
jail that he's handing out to the
convicted prisoners who come be-
fore him for sentence.
