Keren Hayesod Income £9,604,-
000 in 20 Years, Jaffe Reports

—(Palcor Agen-
cy)—Total income of the Pales-
tine Foundation Fund (Keren
Hyesod) during. the 20 years of
its existence has reached the sum
of £9 , 604 , 000, approximately
$50,000,000, Leib Jaffe, a direc-
tor of the Fund, reported at a
press conference on the occasion
anniversary of the
of the 20th anniversary
institution/.
The net income of the Founda-
tion Fund from donations alone
has totaled £7,817,000 in 20
years. Of this amount, the Jew-
ish community of the United
States has contributed £3,592,-
000. Over and above donations,
receipts from other sources, such
s repayments on indebtedness and
income from property, bring to
£9,604,000 the total income for
the period.

Rabbi Israel Rosenberg, presi-
dent of the Union of Orthodox
Rabbis of the U. S. and Canada
and President of the United
Charity Institutions of Jerusalem
issued a statement about the
gravity of the present situation
in the Holy Land which will
Prove catastrophic if help is not
immediately forthcoming.
"The United Charity Institu-
tions of Jerusalem" Rabbi Rosen-
berg pointed out, "is an organi-
zation which comprises the great-
est and foremost institutions in
the Holy Land, such as the "Etz
Chaim" Theological Colleges and
School System which is already
one hundred years old; the Bicur
Cholim Hospitals under the lead-
ership of Professor Hermann
Zondeck, the Free Dispensaries
and the only Home for Incurable
Invalids in Palestine. These in-
stitutions are now faced with the
tragic possibility of being forced
to give up their most essential
activities."
"A cablegrom received from
Dr. Herzog, Chief Rabbi of the
Holy Land, stresses the import-
ance of immediate help so that
these institutions may be able to
fulfill their great task towards
helping thousands of students,
Rabbis, sick and destitute people
there."
"Until the outbreak of the
present European conflict, these
institutions had been receiving
help from many European coun-
tries, from Palestine proper and
from Americ. The help from Eu-
rope has been completely cut off
with the participation of the ma-
jor European powers in this war.
Palestinian Jewry has become
so impoverished by the effects of
war that virtually no help can be
expected from Palestinian Jews.
The only ones that can 'find must
send help are the Jews from
America. But the spread of the
war over the Mediterranean Sea
even to the shores of the Holy
Land has disrupted all direct
mail connections between Amer-
ica and Palestine. The institu-
tions cannot expect to receive
any help unless it is sent by
cable. It is understood that in-
dividual donors cannot undertake
to send their small donations by
cable which entails considerable
expense This can be done only
collectively by a central organi-
zation such as the American
Headquarters of the United Char-
ity Institutions of Jerusalem lo-
cated at 207 East Broadway, New
York. The institutions in Jeru-
salem, therefore, request that all
their friends and sympathezers
in America send their donations
to the New York Office which re-
mits all available funds by cable
to Jerusalem."
Rabbi Rosenberg concludes his
statement with a strong and most
emphatic appeal to all liberal-
and charity-minded people to pre-
vent a most disastrous tragedy
which is inevitable should the ia-
stitutions be forced because of
lack of funds to discontinue their
humanitarian work. It would be
a national calamity and an un-
pardonable historic disgrace
should our generation permit the
disappearance of the great ach-
ievments of the previous genera-
tions who with blood, sweat and
tears have built such wonderful
institutions. Every conscientious
man and woman must, therefore,
rush to the assistance of the Unit-
ed Charity Institutions of Jeru-
salem before it is too late.
