Happy New Year'

CLEMANS TRUCK LINES, Inc.

The worship on the Day of
Atonement in the former Temple
of Jerusalem was distinguished
by splendor and sumptuousness.
The incense which the high-
priest let ascend in the Holy of
Holies, the changing of the offi-
cial costume, which he did dur-
ing the Sabbath of Sabbaths, the
sacrifices which he offered, af-
fected the senses too, produced
the deepest impression and raised
the greatest inspiration. In the
prayer of this day we remember
the brightness which has faded
in innumerable years that have
passed and speak : Happy the eye
which saw all these things.
One official act of the high-
priest has impressed itself on the
mind of mankind because of un-
intentionally expressing a psy-
chological law and has been of
most important significance in
the religious development, i.e.,
the offering . of the scapegoat.
The high-priest laid his hands
on a he-goat and made the fol-
lowing confession of sin: 0 God
I now acknowledge that they
have sinned, they have commit-
ted iniquity, they have trans-
gressed against Thee Thy peo-
ple the house of Israel. I be-
seech Thee now by the ineffable
name of forgive, pardon and
grant expiation for the sins, in-
iquities and transgressions which
they have committed against
Thee Thy people the house of
Israel as is written in the law
of Thy servant Moses from Thy
glorious mouth; On this day
shall it make an atonement for
You, to cleanse you from your
sins before the Lord." Then he
delivered up the scapegoat to a
messenger who led him to the
top of a clip in the desert and
cast him down there.
Babylonians who had come to
Jerusalem for the day of atone-
ment flew into a passion look-
ing at the scape -goat and shout-
ed excitedly: "Go on, go on."
Therefore it was necessary to
have a foot-bridge for the scape-
goat to separate him from the
angry people. They took the un.

fortunate he-goat not for the
bearer of their sins but of his
sins as if the high-priest had
said: "He has sinned, he has
committed iniquity, he has trans-
gressed the scapegoat."
However it fell to the ground-
lessly hated scape-goat to receive
high honors. The man suffering
for the sins of other people was
pitied and glorified. The prophet
Isaja did it in the famous chap-
ter 53. He was so despised that
we hid our faces from him. He
was wounded for "our transgres-
sions." The Romanian govern-
ment hostile to the Jews has
been compelled to give parts of
the country to Bulgaria and Hun -
garia. No wonder that the rage
of the Rumanian people is very
great. To appease them the re-
sponsible statesmen lay their
mistakes on the Jewish scape-
goat and the multitude think as
the Babylonians once: "Go on,
Go on." "With his stripes they
are heeled." As is further writ-
ten in the above mentioned chap-
ter.
The prophet consoles the poor
scape-goat. If he bears the sins
of others with submission like
a "lamb who brought to the
shambles not opens his mouth
and like a sheep who is dumb be-
fore her shearers" he is allowed
to expect a day of recognition

in time to come. One day the
greatest consideration will be
shown him. When they lay their
sins upon us we may bear and
endure conscious of our inno-
cence. The undeservedly beaten
becomes a noble sufferer at whom
the culprits look up repentantly,
Israel so gravely visited by
sufferings and pitiable feels him-
self free from guilt against man-
kind. On the day of atonement
they do not pray for the for-
giveness of sins against mankind
which they are alleged to have
committed them. Sins of that
kind the clay of atonement does
not expiate. Our sages stress em-
phatically: "Sins of a ma n
against another the day of atone-
ment does not expiate but only
sins against God." Rabbi Eleasar
the son of Asarja verified it by
the Bible sentence : "On this day
shall it cleanse you from all
your sins against God."
The role of the scapegoat
forced upon us is not a happy
one for us. Let us strive for a
,trong Israel upon whom others
.?an not wilfully lay their own
sins and who defenselessly must
bear them. That strong Israel
may take upon himself his sins
and sufferings of mankind spon-
taneously, of his own accord
and cooperate to expiate sins and
soften sufferings.
