President, Zionist Organization
of America
Victory to the brave, and they
are brave, who throughout cen-
turies of oppression and perse-
cution, of injustice and cruel at-
tack have refused to accept de-
feat. Brave are they who when
they saw their homes destroyed,
at once began the task of re-
building. Brave are they who
when robbed and pillaged and
deprived of all human rights,
endured without once abandoning
hope for the future. This has
been the story of our people
these past twenty centuries, This
has been the story of our gene-
ration.
It is wrong to assume that we
have been singled out for spe-
cial visitation. Other generations
have suffered too and have sur-
vived totalitarian attacks. We
take courage not alone from the
examples of the past but even
more from the manner in which
our people are facing the dan-
gers of the present.
We, the Jews of America, are
doing all we can to bring relief
to those of our family caught in

A Word To The Wise
Our subscribers advise us that
an agent has been peddling a
proposed volume entitled "Pat-
riotic Service of the Jew," a
spokesman for the Union Amer-
ican Hebrew Congregitions, Cin-
cinnati, declared. Although money
for the book has been collected
during the past year from vari-
ous individuals, neither the boo':
nor the author can be traced.

ful that in these United States
we have the freedom not alone
to shape our own lives and to
worship in our own way, but also
the means and the opportunity
to help save the remnant of Is-
rael. We must resolve to de-
vote our means and our strength
to preserve and to extend what
our Chalutzim have already es-
tablished in Palestine. As Amer-
icans we shall pray for the pre-
servation of democracy and for
the redemption of free peoples
everywhere in the world. We
must have complete faith in the
ultimate defeat of the enemies
of democracy and when that day
shall come Israel in Palestine
will find its proper place among
the nations of the world. On the
threshold of this New Year our
thoughts go out to our people
everywhere—here and abroad, in
Europe and in Palestine who
must face the future with coin-
age and with faith. We, too,
must have that faith. We, too,
must have that courage; and the
victory shall be ours.
EDMUND I. KAUFMANN
the "no man's land" of Europe.
We have seen however that re-
lief in itself, while necessary,
cannot adequately meet the prob-
lem of Jewish homelessness. It
is to our credit therefore that
we had the foresight to begin
the preparation of a home of
refuge in Palestine for those
made homeless in Europe.
Since the coming of Hitler,
and particularly since the begin-
ning of the war, all of us in
America have been overwhelmed
with appeals for help from fel-
low Jews deprived of all their
material possessions, of all hu-
man civil and political rights. In
our desire to rescue them we
sought refuge for them in all
countries of the world including
our own. Everywhere the doors
were shut; or opened just a lit-
tle way—reluctantly and grudg-
ingly. True we have managed to
save a fortunate few and to pro-
vide them with some measure
of security in our own midst, but
the great problem of resettle-
ment for the many thousands,
still caught in the European up-
heaval, remains. We have tried
and investigated many schemes
of resettlement in many sections
of the world. But the experience
of these past years gives con-
vincing proof to even the most
doubting of our fellow Ameri-
can Jews that our greatest hope
rests in Palestine. For this great
task we must appeal on this New
Year not alone to the Zionists
of America but to all the Jews
of America. The problem of Jew-
ish homelessness and its solution
is the concern of all of us. I
appeal to all Jews of every class
and of every shade of opinion to
join in helping to preserve what
we have already established in
Palestine. We must unite to help
extend the possibilities of Pal-
estine as a place of immediate
refuge. Tens of thousands of
Jews eagerly await the chance to
settle there. We must give them
that chance.
Hitler did not find us all to-
gethered unprepared. One-half
million Jews who otherwise would
have been without a home over
their heads now have home and
security in Ezetz Yisroel. Organ-
ized, strong, self-sufficient they
face the future with courage and
faith. They have proven their
ability to defend it as well as
to build it. They present the
greatest human manifestation of
our time, establishingonot merely
a haven of refuge but a rich
new life and social order that
invites
tes
. the admiration of the
w orl d
This achievement of our peo-
ple in Palestine should make us
proud. The example of their
courage and bravery should in-
spire us with new hope and with
new courage to face the future.
As we join in prayer for the
New Year we should thank God
for the privilege that is ours to
help build once more the Jewish
Homeland. We should be grate-
