Democracy today confronts the
greatest crisis in its history. It
is being attacked on every front.
The three major instruments of
attack on democracy are military
aggression, economic warfare and
propaganda.
However much we may regret
it, we must arm to the teeth if
American democracy is to be
preserved. We must give the
most earnest and intelligent con-
sideration to economic problems
and the problems of world trade.
However, propaganda is the most
subtle and sinister enemy of
American democracy. We are not
doing anything comparable to this
in combating anti-democratic pro-
paganda. In fact, many American
people are inclined to discount
the importance of the ideological
warfare on democracy.
It is interesting and discon-
certing to note that so many
among us look upon anti-Semit-
ism merely as a base and repre-
hensible human prejudice. The
fact is that anti-Semitism is one
of the major devices by means of
which our enemies hope to de-
stroy American democracy. It is
the banner around which the
anti-democratic forces are being
rallied.
The outcome of the present
crisis is still in doubt. Democracy
and human liberty are at stake.
With heroic effort, we can pre-
serve them.
CIUDAD TRUJILLO — The
Jewish population of all parts of
the Dominican Republic gathered
Aug. 5, on the recently acquired
ground near Ciudad Trujillo to
take part at the festive inaugura-
tion of their cemetery. The pres-
ence of nearly the totality of the
Jewish population at the festival
marked the importanct they are
attaching to this event. Until
now Jewish dead were buried in
the Christian cemeteries as no
Jewish cemetery existed in the
Republic.
The municipal authorities which
have readily granted the permit
for the new cemetery prescribed
the erection of a funeral hall
and several other rooms, the
drawings of which are already
prepared. As the Jewish popu-
lation of this country consists
chiefly of recently arrived poor
refugees, they will probably be
forced to appeal to their broth-
ers abroad for the means they
still need for completion of their
cemetery.

questions which are referred to
it by various agencies, including
the New York City Information
Center and various general pub-
lications and newspapers, the
Bureau has started with a fairly
good reference library. is con-
stantly accumulating documents,
reports and publications of every
variety including pictures and
many magazines and newspaper
clippings, thus in a sense, build-
ing up a communal archive
which is becoming more complete
and more useful as time goes
on.
With many thousands of In-
quirers testifying to the useful-
ness of the Bureau, the experi-
mental stage of work has now
been passed and the time seems
to have arrived for strengthen-
ing and enlarging its scope of
activities. It needs better facil-
ities for accumulating and dup-
licating material and a better
staff for handling the requests
for information. In other words,
it needs additional support and
contributions towards the very
modest and economical budget
with which it has been operating.
It appeals also for an added num-
ber of voluntary workers such
as have previously rendered ex-
cellent service to it.
