MEDALS PRESERVE FAME
OF PROMINENT JEWS AND
GREAT JEWISH EVENTS
European communities for
many centuries have commemo-
rated outstanding achievements
and signal events by issuing com-
memorative coins. When a new
synagogue was built in Vercelli,
Italy, in 1878, a medal was
struck. When the 25th anniver-
sary of Henri Loeb as Grand
Rabbi of Belgium was reached in
1859, his likeness was preserved
on a medal. When the great
statesman and diplomat, Rufus
Daniel Isaacs, died in England, his
memory was honored by a medal
designed by A. Lowenthal. In this
way we have an unusual record
of Jewish history in these medals.
Samuel Friedenberg, a mer-
chant in New York City, has
been searching the world for the
past four years for Jewish medals
and has gathered together a col-
lection of over 300 items. Some
200 of these medals are now
being displayed in a special ex-
hibition at the Jewish Theolo-
gical Seminary of America. The
Museum of Jewish Ceremonial
Objects there has set aside five
cases for this exhibition, which
is open to the public without
