DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle

LECTURE ON MacLEISH
BY ISAAC FRANCK

Archibald MacLeish, recently
appointed librarian of Congress
and one of America's outstanding
poets, will be the subject of a
lecture to be given nt the Jew-
ish Community Center, on Tues-
day, July 23,
at 9 p. m. This
lecture will be
the third in a
series of eight
Tuesday night
"Book Chats,"
on books and
subjects of cur-
rent interest.
The lecturer
Isaac Franck
will be Isaac
Franck, educational director at
the Jewish Community Center.
Mr. Franck, in addition to his
training in Education Social
Work, is a student of philosophy
and literature, with a special in-
terest in modern American poe-
try. He majored in these studies
at New York University, and
pursued graduate work in them
at Columbia and Harvard. The
title of the lecture is "The Voice
of America," and the lecturer
will attempt to trace MacLeish's
poetic development from his early
work to his most recent poem,
"America Was Promises." The
lecture will include readings of
shorter poems and of excerpts
from MacLeish's longer works.
Others in this series of sum-
mer book chats were given by
Miss Charlotte Shaw of the staff
of the Detroit Public Library,
who will also give the concluding
review in the series, on Tuesday,
Aug. 27. The book then to be
reviewed is Richard Wright's
"Native Son." The four book
reviews following the talk on
MacLeish will be given by Wil-
liam Ewing, who is also a mem-
ber of the staff of the Detroit
Public Library. These book chats
are open to the public, free of
charge. A social hour with sum-
mer refreshments follows each of
the talks.
