DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle 14 MEDALS PRESERVE FAME OF PROMINENT JEWS AND GREAT JEWISH EVENTS European communities for many centuries have commemo- rated outstanding achievements and signal events by issuing com- memorative coins. When a new synagogue was built in Vercelli, Italy, in 1878, a medal was struck. When the 25th anniver- sary of Henri Loeb as Grand Rabbi of Belgium was reached in 1859, his likeness was preserved on a medal. When the great statesman and diplomat, Rufus Daniel Isaacs, died in England, his memory was honored by a medal designed by A. Lowenthal. In this way we have an unusual record of Jewish history in these medals. Samuel Friedenberg, a mer- chant in New York City, has been searching the world for the past four years for Jewish medals and has gathered together a col- lection of over 300 items. Some 200 of these medals are now being displayed in a special ex- hibition at the Jewish Theolo- gical Seminary of America. The Museum of Jewish Ceremonial Objects there has set aside five cases for this exhibition, which is open to the public without THE FEDERATION OF LITHUANIAN JEWS IS GIVING THE SECOND ANNUAL PICNIC AT BUDKA PARK, SUNDAY, JULY 28TH A five-piece orchestra, dancing, amusements, games, fun for all.
