Shown here inspecting Jacob
Epstein's portrait of Dr. Albert
Einstein in the Art Gallery of
the Jewish Palestine Pavilion• at
the New York World's Fair are
four of the outstanding enter-
tainers who participated in a
recent broacast at the Cafe Tel
Aviv in the Pavilion in which a
direct appeal was made to the
radio audience for contributions
to the Maintenance Fund of this
exhibit. The celebrities in this
picture are, left to right: Mau-
rice Schwartz, founder and star
of the Yiddish Art Theatre;
Harry Hershfield, renowned car-
toonist and commentator; Sam
Jaffe, featured player of "The
Eternal Road," "The Lost Hori-
zon" and other stage and film
dramas; and Cantor Moishe
Clysher, famous singer. As a re-
sult of their appeal a large sum
was raised in cash and pledges

for the Palestine Pavilion Main-
tenance Fund.
The broadcast was one of a
s eries that • directly appeals to
listeners to aid the Pavilion,
which needs the continued sup-
port of the Jews of this country
if it is to remain open for the
duration of the World's Fair.
Because of its magnificent por-
trayal of the constructive ac-
hievemenLs of Jewish refugees
in Palestine the Pavilion is re-
garded as particularly important
at this time, when the problem
of resettlement of victims of
totalitarianism faces the world.
The Detroit Jewish Chronicle
urges its readers to help assure
the maintenance of the Palestine
Pavilion, which stands in the
World of Tomorrow as an do-
quent symbol of Jewish deter-
mination to survive the persecu-
tion of today and to participate

in the building of a better fu-
ture for all mankind. Do your

Undaunted by the European
war crisis, under the shadow of
which the 21st Zionist World
Congress was held in Geneva,
Switzerland, leaders of the Keren
Kayemeth resolved to go on with
the purchase and reclammation
of the soil of Eretz Israel so that
the Homeland for the Jewish
victims of Nazi hatred, war of
nerves and actual warfare may
be extended.
Menahem Ussishkin, president
of the Congress and of the Keren
Kayemeth Le Israel (standing),
is seen here delivering an ad-
dress in acknowledgment of a
$250,000 check presented to him
by Dr. Lime! Goldstein (right).
president of the Jewish National
Fund of America, as another In-
stallment of this year's contribu-
tion by U. S. Jewry towards the
Palestine Land Fund. The hopes
for the further upbuilding of
Eretz Israel are pinned on Amer-
ican Jewry which is now in the
vanguard of the work for the
Jewish National Fund," Mr.
Ussishkin declared. During the
current year, the Jewish Nation-
al Fund of America, under the
leadership of Dr. Israel Gold-
stein, remitted to Jerusalem for
Palestine Land Redemption the
amount of $1,600,000, or ap-
proximately 70 percent of the
Fund's world income.
"We will win if we succeed
in increasing our land holdings,"
Ussishkin told Dr. Goldstein and
120 members of the American
delegation of all Zionist parties
to the Geneva Conference. Dr.
A. Granovsky, famous expert on
Palestine soil problems and a
director of the Jewish National
Fund in Jerusalem, is seated at
left. Dr. Solomon Goldma n,
president of the Zionist Organi-
zation of America, Mrs. Judith

Alumah

An

Institution for Torah and
sad Jewish Knowledge in
Ereta Israel

Sometime before Hitler and his
hordes swooped down over ..Ger-
many casting their black wings
of spiritual devastation and per-
secution over the land, many had
already left that country and
Came to Eretz Israel. That was
at the time when prosperity still
reigned in Palestine, 'ere the Arab
terror broke out.
The Jews who. arrived at that
time in Palestine found that the
educational institutibns in exist-
ence were not to their liking. The
systems were either too religious
or too secular. The need was felt
for an institution of learning in
which would be combined the tra-
ditionalism of a yeshivah and the
wordliness of a university.
To answer this purpose there
was formed a committee of Jewish
scholars and leaders who under-
took the foundation of a new in-
stitution of learning which they
tallest:* "Alumah" (coined from
the words 'Aguda Lemadat Hays-
baduth) whose aim it would be
to prepare non-professional stu-
dents and at the same time give
them a scholarly background and
also to give a thorough religious
training for those intending to
enter the rabbinate. It was a dif-
ficult enterprise but those who
undertook it did not despair and
soon their dreams became a
reality.
Among those on the Palestinian
Board of Directors are to be found
men in all walks of life such es
Rabbi Benjamin, Dr. B. M.
Levine, Dr. C. H. Keller, Profes-
sor Brady, Dr. Noah Brown,

at al.

•The Alumah has the following
desuristme,nts: 1) A Maimonides
Library containing a great num-
ber of books on "Chochmath Is-
rael"; 2) Annual Alumah
Publication; 3) Extension courses
for adults in Jewish philosophy,
Bible history, jurisprudence,
pedagogy,
Oriental languages,
etc.; 4) The Yeshivah proper.

ROSH HASHONAII GREETINGS TO ALL!

Grea t! Decline

German dye exports fell off
heavily in 1938, according to
a report released by Dr. Joseph
Tenenbaum, chairman of the
Joint Boycott Council. Last
year exports declined approxi-
mately 11,000 metric tons in
•volume and 37 million marks
in value to a total of 27,506
tons valued at 109,116,000
marks, which, according to Dr.
Tenenbaum, is a new low vol-
ume level and the lowest value
level for the past 10 or 15
years.
Dr. Tenenbaum points out
that the heaviest losses Ger-
many suffered occurred in the
Far Eastern markets. Exports
of aniline and sulphur dyes to
British India fell to 8,641,000
from 13,000,000 marks; China
to 5,053,000 from 8,005,000
marks; Japan to 619,900 from
7,379,000 marks.
A number of European
countries, especially Great
Britain and the Netherlands,
also purchased considerably
less. Exports to Russia de-
clined from 1,7000,000 marks
in 1937 to 418,000 marks in
1938, while Turkey's imports
declined from 1,227,000 to
816,000 marks.
Dr. Tenenbaum points out
that this trend was true of
dye exports to this country as
well as leading Latin-Ameri-
can markets. The greatest de-
cline was in shipments to Ar-
gentine which were valued at
2,547,000 marks in 1937 and
1,491,000 marks in 1938.

Deny Citizenship to 45,000
Jewish Families

BUCIIAREST. (WNS) — A
total of 135,000 Jews have lost
their Rumanian citizenship on
vvarious grounds including such
charges as fraudulent entry and
insufficient length of residence.
During the past two weeks ap-
proximately 45,000 Jewish fami-
lies were told to apply for alien
residents' permits before Aug.
25 or face removal to concentra-
tion camps. According to figures
supplied by the American Jewish
Committee, there are approxi-
mately 728,000 Jews in Rumania.
Six Carpatho - Russian Jews
were sentenced to prison for il-
legal entry into Rumania, by a
military court at Cluj, capital of
the Rumanian province of Tran-
sylvania. The defendants, said to
have entered Rumania after the
Hungarian occupation of Caine-
tho-Russia, testified they fled be-
cause of fear of Hungarian vio-
lence.
