SEASON'S
GREETINGS
For the New Year
1939 -- 5700
FROM
MOE LEITER & ASSOCIATES
During the past kw ye•rs
our race h•s born the load
of many troubles. We have
come through times of de-
pression and decrease d
earnings, but from our pri-
vations we have learned
much.
The value of life insur•
once has been forcibly
brought home to those
fortunate enough to be
Policy•owners, and people
generally have seen more
clearly the advantage of
life insurance investments.
The new year is a logical
time to consider the condi-
tion of your estate in terms
of the protection which life
'nsurance provides.

Greetings of the Start of this Year
An Exclusive Rosh Hashonah Message to The
Detroit ,Iewish Chronicle
By CHARLES EDWARD RUSSELL
Chairman, Pro-Palestine Federation of America
Something most sobering, something appalling
and startling pertains to the situation of the Jews
in the world today. , The most innocent of all
peoples' notable contributors to every worthy
phase of civilization's advance, they are the vic-
tims of such a resurrection of old Cave-man per-
secutions as enlightened men had believed to be
buried forever in a dusty and dishonorable past.
This means as much to the rest of us as it means
to the Jews.
Because, first, if one minority group can be
thus haunted, hunted and proclaimed for exter-
mination by an arrogant and reckless majority,
so can any other minority group, and at once
vanishes all pretense to a juridical system of
security in this world, and mankind goes back
to chaos.
And second, because what is really attacked
ill the Jews is their exercise of the right of con-
science, and the right of conscience is fundamental
to all other human rights. It will be exceedingly
well for all of us that believe in those rights to
look squarely at the menacing proportions of this
issue. The offense of the Jew is that in accord-
ance with his conscience and his convictions, he
worships God in a synagogue. If he has no right
so to worship, what right have I or Father Cough-
lin or any other Christian to worship God in a
church? And if we have no such right, then the
Fifteenth Century has come again and all that
has been gained for human freedom by all these
generations of heroes and martyrs has been lost.
Now, from the plain terms of these propositions
there is no logical escape. I say, therefore, to my
Christian friends that they are in relatively greater
peril than the Jews and that I cannot understand
their apparent indifference to the disaster that is
surely ahead of them if this madness continues.
And if the apparent lack of resentment against
this menace results from lack of acquaintance with
it, then let me say to my Jewish friends that they
have it in their power to render to civilization
and to the cause of human freedom a notable
service.
This is no time for stoical sufferance, it is no
time for the shrugged' shoulder and the closed
lip. You have an impeccable cause, you have
been shamefully tricked and cheated about Pales-
tine, you are being insulted daily with fresh trick-
ster schemes to shil).4 4the ends of the earth the
Jewish victims of 'ngle: lenaia, sance. ,Put
your cause and casoliefOre the American people.
' No real American can have the slightest sympathy
with this vast rearward drive. Have confidence
in the sense of justice and of fair play that is
part of the American spirit. Let America know
of the realities of the Jewish problem and the
voice of America will stay the hand of the Cave-
man in every part of the world.

I GUESTS AT YOUR TABLE FOR 70 YEARS,
5700
By DR. CYRUS ADLER
President, Jewish Theological Seminary of America
An Old Friend Says,
HAPPY NEW YEAR
We greet you warmly on this, your
Holiday! We genuinely appreciate the
patronage and good will with which
you have favored us through nearly
three decades now – and we'll sincerely
strive to be more-than-ever deserving
of it through the coming year!
These sacred days, always no
solemn, are clothed with a spe-
cial dignity and significance in
these troubled times. The past
years have witnessed a wide-
spread renew/al of the conviction
that man's ultimate hope must be
his faith in God. The fruits of
skepticism and materialism have
proven destructive, not only of
the !human spirit, but also of
everything valuable in our civil-
ization. Whole countries have
been turned over to atheism and
neo-paganism; and with the rise
of these anti-religious movements,
have come the suppression of
human freedom, the sacrifice of
human dignity, and the frustra-
tion of human thought and ar-
tistic creativity.
The Jewish people, doubtless In
part because we have been so
singularly and distinctively de-
voted to the ideals of peace and
human freedom, have been made
to suffer more than any other.
As we assemble for prayer to
God for continued life during
the next year, our hearts inevit-
ably turn to the thousands whose
lot has been so embittered that
many of them have preferred
death to life. We have, as a
community, made heroic sacri-
fices to alleviate their sufferings,
sacrifices commensurate with our
more fortunate situation, and vet
inadequate to meet the pressing
needs of saving the remnant
which can be saved, and helping
as many as possible to adjust
themselves to a new life.
Their hope and our hope must
in the end, be not in man, but
in God. Human wisdom has
faltered and proven unavailing.
"Let us search and try our ways,
and return unto the Lord. Let
us lift up our heart with our
I hands, unto God in !leaven."
The New Year
Again we take pleasure in
The greatest measure of joy and happiness
throughout the NEW YEAR
It has been a pleasant year in which we have
continued contact with our old friends and ,
made many new ones; in which we have tried
sincerely to be worthy of being known as your
favorite store. Here's to the New Year .. .
