A symposium on the problem
of the ''Defense of Jewish Rights"
will be participated in by Dr.
Leo M. Franklin, rabbi of Tem-
ple Beth El, Fred M. Butzel,
communal leader, and Rabbi Mor-
ris Adler, assistant rabbi of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek. A
question and answer period will
follow as well as a musical pro-
gram to be rendered by Mrs.
Mildred Brasch, soprano, and
Mrs. Gertrude Oberstein, pianist.
Last Monday night the gen-
eral committee of Pisgah Lodge
held a meeting and disposed of
several routine matters as well
as referring several matters to
lodge for its meeting of Oct. 2.
Rabbi Adler, chairman of the
cultural committee, announced
that in addition to the symposium
the cultural committee is plan-
ning an evening of Jewish music
in October, a debate between
Hillel Foundations of the Uni-
versity of Michigan and Ohio
State during the month of No-
vember. Other programs to be
announced shortly will bring to
the community outstanding Jew-
ish and non-Jewish speakers.

Latest reports from the war front reveal that Jews in
Polish cities are being subjected to most brutal treatment
by the Nazis. Jews have been thrown in concentratio
n camps
in reprisal for the
t of Nazis by British in Palestine.

New German publications printed in Polish and circu-
lated in East Prussia carry on a vicious war propaganda
campaign against the Jews.
Reliable sources reveal that hundreds of Jews were
executed in cities in Poland occupied by the Germans.
Leaders in Jewish communities are held as hostages and
heavy fine. have been imposed upon
the Jews threatening
that unless they are paid the leaders will be killed.
The Hungarian press discloses that at least
500,000
Jews from Galicia have escaped across the Polish-Russo-
Carpathian border.
In the meantime large numbers of Jews ar e
enlisting
in the foreign legion. to fight
against the Nazis.
At the same time, the Nazis are appealing to Jewish
professional men to return to Germany
and to assume posts

Initial steps for the mobilization
of Detroit Jewry in efforts ,for
defense of the rights of Jews
throughout the world were taken
at the annual meeting of the De-
troit chapter of the American Jel-
tab Congress on Monday evening,
at Central High School,
Addresses were delivered by
Mrs. Stephen S. Wise, national
president of Women's Division of
the American Jewish Congress;
Dr, A. M. Il e r s h m an, Joseph
Haggai and Philip Slomovitz, re-
tiring president of the Detroit
chapter.

Reports were submitted at this
meeting by Sol Lifsitz, re-elected
treasurer, and Aaron Rosenberg,
chairman of the nominating com-
mittee.

Under the chairmans hip of
Rabbi S. Z. Fineberg of Flint, vice-
president for its North-Central
Division, the Michigan Synagogue
Conference will gather the rep-
resentatives of organized com- I
munities and isolated Jewish fami-
lies residing in 45 cities and towns
of the Central section of the state
and the Northern Peninsula. The
regional convention will take place
on Sunday, Oct. 1, second day of
Chol ha'Moed Succoth, at Saginaw.
It will be the first time that the
Jewish leaders of that area will
meet under the auspices of the
state-wide synagogue body. Similar
gatherings were held previously
in South Haven and Pontiac, for
the Western and Eastern Divi-
sions, respectively,
Isadore Cohen, president of the
Michigan Synagogue Conference,
has been invited to address the

Saginaw meeting, which will take
place four weeks prior to the
fall convention of the state organi-
zation, scheduled for Sunday, Oct.

Eva Prenzlauer Maternity
Aid to Meet After
Holy Days

A board meeting of the Eva
l'renzlauer Maternity Aide was
held Tuesday at the home.of Mrs.
Charles Rubin.
Reports were given by Mrs. Rose
Goldberg and Mrs. Rose Rose, case
workers, on maternity and ton-
silectory cases.
Entertainment was given by
talented little Jean Rubin,
Mrs. Sam Osnos donated to the
flower fund in honor of her new
granddaughter. A donation was
also made by Mrs. Gert, Mrs. S.
Soloman also contributed to the
memorial fund, honoring the re-
covery of her sister-in-law, Mrs.
Carrie Steinberg, and in memory
, of Mrs. Fannie Solomon.
A regular meeting will be held
after the Holy Days.
