Political parties take action in
sporadic cases, but do not seem to
grasp the real danger, while the
membership of the NSB is grow-
ing steadily. The Dutch people
have no sympathy with anti-Semi-
tic attacks, but the "political
ideas" of Mussert are gaining
ground as a result of increasing
economic distress, and it is there-
fore not a coincidence that anti-
Jewish attacks have been increas-
ing lately. A few weeks ago the
party began to issue a daily news-
paper (until then it had only week-
ly publications) which day in and
day out contains an anti-Semitic
attack of some kind or other, out-
spoken or disguised. Public opin-
ion is being stirred up against
Jewish charity organizations, Jew-
ish officials, Jewish refugees, the
world-renowned conductor Bruno
Walter, to mention only a few ex-
amples. The links with the Ger-
man national Socialist movement
are becoming more and more ap-
parent and recently Mussert paid
an official visit to Hitler.
TRADITIONAL TOLERANCE
NO ABSOLUTE GUARANTEE:
Is the Dutch Jewry in danger?
So far Holland has had no expe-
rience with organized anti-Semi-
tism, the Dutch tolerance both on
the part of the government and
of the Dutch people, being an un-
disputed fact. But this fact is no
"absolute guarantee" against the
carefully cultivated and slowly
germinating anti-Semitism which
is spread with a dangerous knowl-
edge of Dutch psychology and
habits of mind. Mussert's follow-
ers belong to the middle class hard
hit by the depression; their ranks
include unemployed from Dutch
Indies, who lost good jobs in the
colonies as a result of the crisis
and have come where they have
no prospects. These circles are
everywhere and also in Holland
an easy prey for anti-Semitic
propaganda, even if they had never
before felt any antagonism toward
the Jews and even if it is true
that anti-Semitism on the German
model would never catch on in
Holland. The Dutch Jewry does not
realize the danger and obstinately
believes in the permanence of
Dutch tolerance. Warnings are
usually answered with a reference
to the wholly different mentality
of the Dutch people as opposed to
the Germans. Counteraction is
usually long delayed. Yet elections
are due in a few months and the
NSB is certain to become a factor
in parliamentary life. Although
it is not for the time being going
to alter the majority relations, it
will nevertheless be able to exert
an indirect influence.
Thus in the classical land of
religious tolerance an anti-Semitic
movement is growing which, while
not attempting to uproot the legal
and political position of Dutch
Jewry, is nevertheless becoming a
menace. This anti-Semitic tendency
will gain or lose ground, accord-
ing to the development of the eco-
nomic situation of the country; its
spreading is favored by financial
subsidies from Germany. The dan-
ger is therefore a serious one and
it Is to be deplored that Jews re-
siding in a country which has a
borderline with Germany, are not
protecting themselves actively
against new enemies.

Harry Yudkoff of Detroit, and
several other Bnai Brith leaders.
The Michigan Bnai Brith Coun-

lodges of Michigan for joint and
cooperative action, to assist Indi-
vidual lodges in membership and
educational activities, to encourage
and sponsor the formation of new
lodges, and to do anything else to
advance the reputation and use-
fulness of the order in the state.
This includes the coordinating of
the efforts of the Bnai Brith in
furthering the work of the Hillel
Foundations, the A. Z. A., and in
promoting generally the youth ac-
tivities of th eorder; and in lend-
ing active assistance to the Anti-
Defamation League in its Im-
portant activities. The Council
aims also to encourage individual
lodges to assume active participa-
tion in all other Jewish and Com-
munal affairs in their respective
communities.
All the sessions of the council
for Jan, 10 will be open to the
public and will take place at the
Pantlind Ilotel. The official pro-
gram begins at 1:30 in the after-
noon when the Michigan Bnal
Brith Council will be called to or-
der by its president, Rabbi Jerome
D. Folkman. Committee reports
will be read and the business of
the conference taken up.
The banquet-dinner-dance will
be at 7 p. m. Rabbi Leon From of
Detroit will give the invocation.
The only address of the evening
will be delivered by Richard Gut-
etadt of Chicago. Mr. Gutstadt has
been associated with Bnai Brith
for 25 years. He was for several
years secretary of District Grand
Lodge No. 4 of Bnai Brith which
comprises the western states with
headquarters in San Francisco.
For the past eight yehrs he has
been the executive director of Final
Brith's Anti-Defamation League.
The afternoon sessions, the ban-
quet and the dance are open to the
public. Admission to the afternoon
session is free. Reservations for
the dinner-dance may be made with
Harry Yudkoff, secretary of the
Michigan Bnai Brith Council, 2159
National Bank Bldg., Randolph

he made with any of the presi-
dents of the Michigan Bnai Brith
lodges.
Many Detroiter( have already
made their reservations for this
affair and are planning to charter
a railroad couch or busses. Others
desirous of attending the Council
sessions must make their reserva-
