editorial under the heading "Our Minis-
try":

It is, we believe, no exaggeration to say

that the state of the Jewish Ministry in this
country, and particularly the state of its chief
Seminary, is being viewed in many quarters
with increasing concern. This is not a new
thing. Ministers have always been treated to
plenty of criticism, and not Jewish Ministers
alone, But what sharpens present criticism is
the feeling in many quarters that in the pre-
valent anxious conditions, the gentlemen of
the cloth are not playing, and perhaps are
not generally fitted to play, the vital part ex-
pected of them. The personnel of the Ministry
is adjudged weak. Its power to influence the
present drift, to influence the Jewish youth,
is minimized if not denied outright. It is en-
visaged not as a group of religious leaders
but as a collection of communal function-
aries out of touch with realities and impotent
in relation to the religious and secular prob-
lems that confront us. The estimate may be a
sweeping one. There may be, and are, among
us, some preachers whose addresses are not
devoid of power and others who do more
useful work than performing routine duties
and drawing their salaries. And it would as-
suredly be an un-Jewish thing to make the
clergy the scapegoat for all our ills. But that
there is something and not a little in the com-
plaints that are made, few would be disposed
to deny.
