Interchange of Correspondence Shows How Republican Candidate
Opposed the Ku Klux Klan and Bolted His Party to De-
fend Principle of Tolerance

SHIRTS

August 21, 1936

Rabbi Rubinstein of Vilna, .mho
said "the Nazi regime is operat-
ing a tremendous machinery at
enormous cost to infect the
world with anti-Semitism," a
resolution dealing with the status
of Jews in Germany and the
spread of Nazi propaganda is di-
rected against Jews throughout
the world, thus endangering the
internal and external peace of all
countries." The League of Na-
tions and its affiliate institutes of
intellectual co-operation are ask-
ed to realize the great danger
in the anti-Semitic propaganda
as a threat to peace and involv-
ing the destruction of modern
civilization. These bodies are
asked to realize the great dan-
ger in the anti-Semitic propa-
ganda as a threat to peace and
involving the destruction of mod-
ern civilization. These bodies
are asked "to bring about an in-
ternational agreement concerning
the spreading of false news and
facts." The resolution protests
"the barbarous persecution of
German Jews and invites all Jews
to take up the challenge of na-
tional socialism and to answer it
with energetic resistance until
the full moral and civil equality
of German Jewry is restored and
untd hatred and defamation of
the Jewish people's honor ceases."
The record of three years of
attempted solution of the plight
of the Jewish refugees from Ger-
many, through international ac-
tion, relief and emigration assist-
ance, was subjected to a wither-
ing barrage of criticism by Dr.
Georg Bernhard, one of the most
distinguished exiles front Ger-
many, who charged that the Jew-
ish people were largely to blame
for the negligible results achieved
because of the "fear and timor-
ousness of Jews themselves." Dr.
Bernhard, who was formerly edi-
tor-in-chief of the Ullstein Press
in Germany and is now edito• of
the Paris Tageszeitung, warned
that suicides among the refugees
were increasing, a symptom of
the neglect with which they are
said to have been treated.
"The refugee movement has
only just begun," the noted edi-
tor prophesied, as he condemned
Jewish relief organizations for
their alleged mishandling of the
refugee problem hitherto. Ile
also scored the League and mem-
ber powers for their indifference
to the exiles from Germany, but
added: "The fact that the nations
have not acted strongly enough
is due not so much to bad will on
the part of the governments but
rather to the fear and timorous-
ness of Jews themselves." Jews
of various countries were afraid
that an influx might harm their
own position and were, therefore,
anxious to keep the refugees out,
he asserted.
