the money changers out of the Temple," Father Coughlin has made it a point to
mention only Jewish names, to give the impression that only Jews are money
changers, to emphasize the myth that the Jewish people—which is so small in
numbers and which has never been so sorely in need of Christian co-operation
and sympathy as in the present period of political and economic oppression ill
Eastern and Central Europe and in numerous other countries in the world-4-
is dolminating the world in finance and in politics. The impression is also given
by this preacher that in this country especially we are controlling the political
situation and are dominating the actions of our Presidents. The charges are so
stupid that to attempt to answer them becomes a matter, almost, of self-degrada-
tion. But when such tttacks are constantly repeated and are even credenced by
repetition; when such charges occasionally begin to assume an aspect of endorse-
ment by the great Catholic Church, we feel that we must direct the appeal to
this important religious group and to call upon them once again to put into
practice their tradition for justice to mankind.
It is needless for us to call the attention of the Catholic Church to the nu-
merous Papal pronouncements condemning persecutions and coming to the de-
fense of Jewish and other oppressed groups. Gregory, the Great, often protected
the Jewish people. Pope Alexander VI was most favorably inclined towards the
Jews. Cardinal Ganganelli, (1705-1774) who became Pope Clement XIV, has
